I did an engine swap in my camaro a couple months ago and am just now getting around to getting it to the transmission shop to have them hook up my TV cable and put a lock up on it. However, while it was sitting in the driveway, it wouldn't go into drive or reverse. Obviously, the shifter would physically move there, but the car would not move in either. The idle didn't move and it really didn't feel like it was trying. I've read this could be something to do with the torque converter not being installed correctly? It's at the shop right now, so I should know in a couple days, but it's killing me. How screwed am I?

Good question. I forgot to mention that. I'm pretty sure it was full. So let's assume it's got fluid.

Cables locked in place under the console, in front of the shifter?

Shifter cable mounted to trans pan?

I had that trouble and it was the cable housing was broke where it conected to a plastic piece under the console before it went to the floor. If there is any bind or break in the housing or fitting it will mess the whole thing up.I had R and 1st.Changed cable and worked great.

Re: 700R4 not going into gear
I can feel it shifting but none of the gears engage, I have revved it up to WOT in all the gears (hoping I wouldn't go flying through the garage walls lol) but it wont move. I was reading some old threads and was kind of leaning towards "sun" something or other. Sun gear or sun housing, I cant remember exactly. I was hoping to get away with an easy fix without dropping the transmission.

Before it went, I drove about 7 miles, parked for an hour then started to drive home. It wouldnt shift out of first so I pulled over and found I was 2 quarts low on transmission fluid. I added the fluid then limped home. In the last half mile, it wouldnt shift out of first again. I babied it home then added fluid. Now here we are.

Re: 700R4 not going into gear
could loosen one of the cooler lines at the radiator and
see if you have tranny fluid under pressure with the
engine running-indicating the pump is working.
