If you take the center console cover off, you'll see that pushing the button pushes downwards on a tab that rides in notches - it's spring loaded - remove the spring and it might be free then.
BUT.... Life is going to be REALLY REALLY dangerous without that - you'll end up bumping into reverse at 70mph (or a passenger, or your dog, or that drink, or something falls forward as your stopping. etc.) There's a reason that cars have ALWAYS had some method of preventing and accidental shift change in an automatic.

well if you wanna make it so you can drop a gear you can probably custom grind the groves the stop it from droping gears so itll still not go into reverse but you can downshift
