Hey guys. Need some serious advice here. It appears that i have lost my 1 to 2 shift at Wide open throttle only. Wtf? Ok, in first gear at WOT and shifting into second (D2) ,all I can hear is a whirring sound and the car will not go into second until i let off of the gas. My tv cable is adjusted correctly. The car shifts just fine when driven normally. Anyone have any idea what might be going on here? Also, for the past year or so, i have had to start using my D1 and D2 to shift at WOT because when the trans is in drive it would do this same thing. SO, like i said about a year ago i would just use D1 and 2 with no problem. Until now. Is there any kind of shift kit or anything i can add to my trans to make it shift normally again? just took car out again to test my 1-2 shift more closely. Ok, what it seems like is when i take off from a 5mph roll and then floor the car in D1 ,right as i get to about 4000 rpms i can feel a slight clunk,then as i try to shift at 4500 rpm into D2 the trans throws my rpms up about 300 rpms (i hear a loud zzzmmmmhh! sound from the trans) High pitched noise. Then it will not shift until i let off of the pedal. Also, when i am in D, and i floor the car at around 30 mph, it just revs and makes a clunk! and then that loud high pitched sound from the trans. Feels like the clunk sound is coming from the rear of the trans. BASICALLY, going into second gear at WOT FEELS LIKE I AM IN NEUTRAL!!! UNTIL, I let off of the gas.

Does this sound like a throttle valve or governor problem?

like I said, if i floor the car at 30 mph it goes nowhere. Just a clunk and it feels like something in the trans is spinning making that high pitched whirring noise. Feels like it is at the rear of the trans. At first i thought my rear was bad or missing teeth!

Sounds like you have a pressure leak in the 1-2 circuit. Quick search says:

Problem: 1-2 shift does not happen at WOT until you let off the gas
Symptom: Middle case leak in the 2nd gear apply circuit (servo assembly or 1-2 accumulator). Doublecheck by using the pressure gauge and watch for a big drop when the PCM commands 2nd gear. Worst case poor line pressure rise

Problem: 1-2 Shift shudder at WOT delayed or abnormal 1-2 shift There's a problem only on the 1-2 shift
Symptom: 1-2 accumulator piston cracked or stuck cocked in the bore.
Possible Fix: Check the yellow spring inside the accum housing for breakage. Also, if the accumulator housing walls are scored, the housing must be replaced. Easy fix in the pan.

Good news is that you can fix all that yourself for about $40 and a transmission book if you want to.

yes, when I go to put my car into second gear , it feels like neutral and the engine just revs. Until i let my foot off of the gas. I think that is a better way to describe this problem.Anyone out there have any more ideas? Please let me know, I am losing sleep over this bullshit.

does it do it from 3 to 4?
the 1-2 accumulator spring could be broken but it's easy to check, is the first one in the accumulator you just have to drop the pan.
check the governor gear it could be warned out and skipping at high rpm

Yes now the car is starting to do it at the 3 to 4 shift at WOT also. Just gets stuck at 4500 rpm and then revs up another 300 rpms or so, then at that point i can take my foot off of gas pedal and shift it.

basically what ever problems i had during manually shifting it have now moved over to when i am in D. These problems are only occuring at WOT.

So how do i fix a pressure leak? I assume drop the valve body and look for bad spring? 3-4 is doing it now, am i looking for 1-2 spring and 3-4 spring?If so, what color are they?

mine shifts late at WOT 1st to second and i have a 305tpi with a 700r4, it just shifts late, no crazyness or noises or anything, and when it shift late it chirps second, maybe it just me cuz im used to manual,

UPDATE. I have still been driving this car and it is now September and it is shifting fine under normal conditions. Also, trans is not slipping , i can floor it if i am going over about 40 no problem and it accelerates fine. I need to know what the hell is going on under WOT conditions? LOL. Still feels like neutral at WOT.
