Fresh rebuild, overdrive acts like neutral

I had a broken foward sprag, causing the transmission to act like neutral in OD.

I recently just finished a full rebuild on it, including all new seals/clutches/stator/shift kit/converter/solenoid/bands/a new 29 element sprag. This has worked, and after almost 200 miles on it, It just "clunked" and went right back to how it was. OD acts like neutral again.

What gives?

were is reverse is it past the drop on the shifter because if it is you need to adjust the shifter cable at the trans. what may be happening is what is shown on the indicator is back almost one full position. that would literally put neutral in the overdrive spot

Maybe the forward or overrun piston is cracked

The shifter cable is adjusted correctly. All the other gears work fine, and it has been driving fine for 200 miles.

We inspected each piece before we put back in, I would think we would've noticed a cracked apply piston. What purpose does this serve in overdrive specifically? Because All of my other gears work just fine.

What are the chances its not a faulty sprag unit? We tested it before we put in and it held well, but who knows.

Solved. Just in case anyone cares, sprag failed again. Took it apart and it was torn to pieces.

Re: Fresh rebuild, overdrive acts like neutral

When the sprag itself fails, you almost always will have to replace the inner race and sometimes the outer race. The inner race must be perfect shape, very flat and smooth (polished). The outer race must be rough to keep the sprag from turning. If the outer race is in good shape, then use 36-40 grit sandpaper and sand the inside by rolling it across a wooden bench, press down hard and do this about a dozen times. If you look at a new outer race, you will see that is has machined grooves going in the direction of rotation in it. This is to keep the sprag from turning.
