quick Q about 9-bolt cone repair
From the tech article on repairing these, they state that you also need to machine the face of the cone as well as its outer lip. The need to machine the face is due to teh raised center section in each carrier (arrow below), no? If I machine this out on a lathe, then I just have to machine the outer lip instead, which I can then buzz down .030-.040" instead of a few thousanths, correct? My current cones still have a little space left, but its not much. It kind of seems like a waste of time to add only a tiny bit more.

Re: quick Q about 9-bolt cone repair
thats exactly what I just did on mine. I did not want to turn the cone face down that much so I machined the case so it I had more room for the cone to move down. Put it together and it seems fine but I have not really driven because of the snow. If you buy replacement cones they don't have the recess in the face and you have to machine the carrier for them to work anyway, so that settled my decision. Now the next time I need to do this I might be able to just buy new cones and shim it and good to go, about 2hrs work - unless of course the carrier walls are worn out too much!
