is $500 too much for 3.73 posi 10 bolt

I am thinking about purchasing a complete 10 bolt rear end with 3.73 gears, 28 spline from craigslist. The guy wants 500 bucks for it. He said it came off an 86 camaro that ran 11 sec 1/4 miles. Does that seem a little steep for a used one. I have seen a couple posts and guys say they find them for $150 bucks.

The '86 would have had 26 spline axles in it. What axles are in this rear end now? What differential is in it? If it's a used Auburn then it's worth the price of scrap mettal. If it's a spool then it shouldn't be used on the street. If it's an Eaton Posi, Duragrip or Torsen then it's good.

Too much for a weak axle rear! Your better off getting an LSD unit from a newer Ls car for 100.00 new 3.73s for 180.00 28-spline axles if you don't have them and have it installed. Then atleast you will know what's in there.

200 bucks max. And if it came out of a 86 it should have 26 spline. but it could have been changed at some point and time. More info would be needed about the posi unit

Re: is $500 too much for 3.73 posi 10 bolt

gonna find out more info tomorrow. The dude called and I am gonna go check it out but he first implied its not on the car, now he said it is still in the car. From the sound of it, you guys think its too much money so I think I will just pass. I have always got good information from everyone here so I wont ignore it. I will repost after I find out a little more.

As always, you guys are the best. Thanks for helping out a fellow 3rd gen lover!

Well, I wouldn't pay that much for one. Maybe $300 for a good solid unit but I paid $125 for my 3:27 POSI 9 bolt last year and that was a steal because MOST of the rear end's around here for sale (mostly 10 bolts) go anywhere from $300 to $900. Most of them are in the $400 to $500 ranges though.

I also sold my 2:77 L/S rear end that came on my car originally with 146,xxx miles on it and got $150 for it. It was a 9 bolt too. I'd get a 9 bolt as those are some of the strongest rear ends out.

I say that's way too much. I just found myself a 10 bolt out of an 02 SS that had 12k miles on it for about $300 and I have a set of 3.73s that I'm picking up from a buddy of mine in trade for a 1L bottle of grey goose.

Re: is $500 too much for 3.73 posi 10 bolt

Depends on what it has... if it has all newer parts like aftermarket 28 spline axles, rear end girdle/cover for support, newer posi like an eaton or something, and nice later model disc brakes it could be worth 500 bucks...as building a 10 bolt up takes some coin. A new eaton posi costs 400-450 bucks alone!

If its a stock take out with 26 spline axles and higher mileage stock posi, then maybe 200-250 or so.

Later model 4th gen 10 bolts with the good, bigger rear brakes and a lower mileage posi can be had for 300 or so. The 99-02 models are most desirable in my opinion as they have the zexel torsen diffs and large LS1 rear brakes. Usually plentiful due to many 4th gen cars getting upgraded rear ends immediately and not many place value on a stock rear but thirdgens can benefit from them.

can you bolt the ls1 cars rear end in the car and will the breaks clear a 15 inch tire?

Re: is $500 too much for 3.73 posi 10 bolt

I passed on it. Had my garage door fall onto the hood denting it and leaving a big ugly streak from the center off to the fender on the pass side. Guess the tax return is going towards that instead of upgrades. I can live with the 3.23's for now but I really want the paint and body to be straight. Thanks for all the advice. Now I know what to expect later on when I come across something in the future.

Yes they will bolt in just fine as long as its a 3 channel non traction control rear end. 3 channel brake lines are like factory thirdgen lines, so there is one connection to the rear end from the body. ABS/Traction control 4 channels have seperate brake lines per side, so there are 2 connections on the rear.

15" wheels...some will clear the brakes some will not without heavy grinding of the brake caliper to gain the clearance. I had to grind my LS1 calipers down to clear my 15" weld prostars. Bogart sells a 15" drag wheel that fits fine. Other 15" street rims and factory rims may need caliper grinding.

That's a terrible deal! I bought a torsen posi, complete LS1 rear brakes, 3.42 gears, and a 10 bolt rear in great shape (for the upgrades) for around $550
