W/C T5 fifth gear modification??
I'm having a ton of trouble locating the correct 5th gear for my 91 T5. First eBay, then the largest transmission shop in the city, gave me the wrong gear. Both the internal spline count and the tooth count are correct, it is just the overall height of the gear that is different.
The gear I keep getting is quite a bit taller, it has an extended "collar". I think it may be the non world class gear. The diameter is the same, it fits fine on the shaft, but of course you cannot fit the retaining snap ring on.
The shop I got the gear from (pretty reputable place) said I should just have a machine shop cut off the collar and that would be no problem. This seems like a terrible idea to me, but my local machine shop said it could be done, probably without too much issue.
For the T-5 experts out there, what do you think? Hopefully I'll get some pictures up right away.
Thanks!

The new one is wider which is good and yeah you could machine it down so it works but I wonder if wider 5th gear was a rolling change later on and they just started selling all gears that way. Try and get ahold of bangin' bob on here or call hanlon motorsports tomorrow.

Page 4 of this http://www.pomoforacing.com/tech/T5Rebuild2002.pdf makes me think it's to replace a washer ring in some boxes. Yours have the ring? My old T5 did: http://monte-list.com/html/images/ma...5/WCT5tail.jpg

That is a fantastic article. Mine does not have a washer ring, all I have is a snap ring to hold the gear in place. I can't seem to find the transmission number. I've contacted Bob so hopefully he can shed some light on the issue.

Sorry guy's haven't been on. My sister in law passed away suddenly. Anyway we machine those all the time. cutting it down is no problem. You could also machine another snap ring goove in the shaft. Some replacement shafts come with two grooves already in them. Hope this helps everyone. If you don't want to do that what tooth count is the gear? maybe we have what you need? Bob

I'm sorry to hear that Bob. Thanks for your input, I would have never thought it would be OK to cut it down...shows what I know! I was also concerned that the non-WC gears might be manufactured to different standards when compared to the WC ones. Maybe I can finally complete that transmission rebuild (your video is helping a lot with that endeavor).

I'm thinking just machining a second grove might be easiest. What exactly would you use to do this?
