I have a 91 Camaro rs that was originally a v6 car. I changed the car over to a 305 carb injected. I used what i was told to be a 700r4 out of a 92 firebird. When i shift from 1st gear to 2nd manually it like the car gets put in neutral. The engine just races and never puts power to the ground. Once i try to shift back to first to get the car back going it acts like it doesnt want to catch 1st again. I have checked the trans fluid and it is fine. I also dont have the tv cable hooked up i plan to just shif manually if it can be done.

 

I wouldn't recommend doing that. That isn't really what the transmission was designed for. If you want to drive it like a manual, then out a manual tranny in it. Just my $.02

 

i mean i have a 383 stroker and a full manual th400 thats just sitting around that i could put in it. Im looking to make a street strip car out of it. The 305 thats in it just has value to me and its been freshly rebuilt. I know a 305 and 700r4 is kind of horrible for this purpose. Im just trying to really figure out whats wrong with the trans before i make the decision to do the swap.

 

I"m not too sure what the problem may be, but mine does the same thing. I never used 1st 2nd or 3rd manually but I've tried them before and got nothing except in first.

 

i mean i have not tried to use it in overdrive just manually to control the shift point. I just like to control the rpms off the line

 

If you have "first" only, then most likely the governor gear is broke or stripped.
