Quick internal questions about 700R4

I pulled the "Red" transmission from my 86 IROC and ran the numbers on the passenger side and got 6 YPM-xxxx-xxx. Should be an 1986 Type 4. (It would only shift in 1st and reverse and clean fluid didnt't help.) Here is a picture of the valve body.

The replacement "dirty" tranny is a untested unit so I need to prep it as well as possible before installation so I don't need to pull it back out ! It's getting bolted to a SBC without ECM and WITH factory vacuum operated TCC control. I ran the numbers on the passenber side and got 6 YPM-xxxx-xxx. Should be an 1986 Type 4, but it's a type 6 based on the 86 shop manual and the wiring. ( maybe someone swapped another VB and harness into it at some point ? ) Here's a pic:

When I removed the valve body from the RED tranny I found 4 check *****. when I opened the DIRTY tranny I only found 3 check *****. The larger "TV Exhaust Check Ball" was missing from the Dirty Tranny. ( circled in Blue )

Should I place this checkball - from the RED tranny - into the DIRTY tranny that I intend to install in my car ?? I don't know if this check ball was missing for a reason.

The RED tanny has a couple "Governor filters" that were not included in the DIRTY tranny. Can I install these into the DIRTY tranny without causing any problems ?

I removed the 1-2 and 3-4 accumulators from both trannies and they have different types of springs. The RED tranny has a RED 3-4 and a PURPLE 1-2. The DIRTY tranny has a BLACK 3-4 and a PINK 1-2.

Last; What accumulator springs should I use for the most "firm" shift possible? If I swap springs, do I need to swap the accumulator housing as well ?? ( I didn't notice any spacers in either unit) I'm guessing the springs from the RED tranny should get used in the DIRTY tranny for the firmest shifts,....

I have already installed the correct speedo gear and have also checked to be sure the same governor is installed in both trannies. ( Both seemed fine so the governor could not have been causeing the no up-shift problem ! ) I intend to simply re-install the spacer plate with new gaskets, re-install the VB, accumulator springs, add the Governor filters, filter and pan. Then the tranny gets installed and I cross my fingers and hope it drives ! If there's anything else I should check while I'm in there. Please let me know. This is obviously not a "rebuild" so much as it is a "prep" to be sure that anything obviously wrong is corrected before the DIRTY tranny goes in.

Thanx in advance for any help !

Re: Quick internal questions about 700R4

Ya',....... I only had a few questions but put a lot of background into this post.

My intensions are:

Install new gaskets on each side of the spacer plate. ( Gaskets were N/G. )

Install the large "TV Exhaust" check ball into the replacement tranny ( was missing when I removed the valve body. )

Install the Piston and RED 3-4 spring and the Piston and PURPLE 1-2 spring from the "bad" tranny into the 'replacement' tranny for firmer shifts. ( I looked again & the replacement tranny had a BLACK 3-4 and a PINK 1-2 )

Install the 2 'governor/converter' filters from the bad tranny into the replacement tranny.

The governor is OK as well as the speedo gear. I don't intend on opening up the tranny any more than it already is. I just want to be sure that adding the check ball and swapping the springs/pistons will not cause any problems.

Is there anything I should look out for or test on the valve body itself while it's removed ??

Thanx in advance for ANY help !!

Re: Quick internal questions about 700R4

Put the stiffer of the springs on the 2nd accumulator. The one for the 4th accumulator can be any one of what is left. Install the spring first, then the accumulator piston in the 4th accumulator setup. Install the large "TV Exhaust" check ball, and both filters. No more than 85-95 inch pounds of torque on the valve body bolts. Make sure that the gaskets "do not" cover any holes on the separator plate. The TransGo Senior Shift kit with the larger boost valves and Corvette servo would be a good move in the near future, if you want more out of this.
