Look what I found under my dash!?

I found this module thing behind the driver's kick panel. It had a big connector on it and a power wire going to an unused slot in the fuse box through an inline fuse. So It seems like its after market.

It says Automatic Transmission Electronics Module and has 2 adjuster screws of some sort, centering adjustment and system sensitivity adjustment.

I have an 84 TA with as far as i can tell stock 700R4. I know its not an electronically controlled unit since it has a detent cable. I'm not running the ECU any more so I'm grounding the connections at the ADL port to lock up the converter. Transmission seems to be shifting ok and everything.

So what is this unit? Does any one know how i can use it? Googling the part number was of no help.

Huh. I couldn't find anything about it in a Google search. Odd find, but a neat one. I'd like to know more about it too.

Re: Look what I found under my dash!?

How may wires on this little puppy? Was it connected to anything other than the fuse box?

Looks like a standalone torque converter lockup controller at first glance.

Re: Look what I found under my dash!?

It was connected to a parallel type connector that a had at least 10-12 wires coming out of it and disappearing up into the dash somewhere. Kind of like a car stereo harness. One of those 10-12 wires was red and plugged into an un-used slot in the interior fuse panel.

The connection all looked very neat and professional and if it wasn't for a radio shack type connection to the fuse box I would have thought it was all factory stock.

The car was completely stock when I got it with all air and emissions equipment present. It was running a CCC quadrajet so I'm not sure why someone would need a separate TC lockup system.

There's no GM or AC Delco markings on it any where so it has to be after market. I wonder what exactly the centering and sensitivity adjustments are. What exactly in an automatic tranny needs to be centered?

Re: Look what I found under my dash!?

So curiosity got the better of me and I took the mystery unit apart. Inside was a single circuit board with 2 adjustment pots, 2 LEDs, a single IC chip and a bunch of transistors, capacitors, and resistors soldered to it. Looks like real old technology.

On the front of the board is stamped "AT 25003".

On the back of the board is stamped "TCI-AnS 94V-0", "25001", "101083" and "OEM PEP AT or MT".

Certainly looks like some sort of transmission controller.

Re: Look what I found under my dash!?

Not anything audio related; those wouldn't say "automatic transmission" on them.

It does say "TCI". Sounds like an aftermarket lockup controller to me. It's REALLY REALLY old though... looks early 90s at the newest.

94 V-0 is a UL standard.... UL 94 is the standard for flammability of electrical materials, and V-0 is a specific level of flame spread resistance in the vertical flame test. (Yes I design electronic products at the PCB level for a living ATM as part of my daily grind) That is just a standard grade of raw PCB material and has nothing to do with what the product does, as such.

The only date code I can see on there is on the PGA; the "310". That'll be the 10th week of a year ending in 3.

I'd suggest maybe a call to TCI in the morning and see what they have to say. http://www.tciauto.com/

Re: Look what I found under my dash!?

Ive never seen one but the link Red Rock has shown us I think you better put it back together and place it back where you found it and never mention it to anyone ever again. lol
Interesting link red rock but then again Ive never seen one and would also be interested if anyone else has seen one or even has one in their car

Re: Look what I found under my dash!?

Mystery Solved!!!

It's an aftermarket cruise control brain for automatic transmissions. Most probably a dealer installed option. The pots are for speed sensitivity adjustment.

Some guy on this forum found the same thing in his van, but for manual transmission.

Wonder if anyone else around here has one of these lurking behind their dash.
