no 2-1 kickdown

I notice when taking off my car shifts
between 3000 & 3500 rpm even at wot. Then if I'm
Cruising down low in second and go wot
There's no kickdown (even at 15 to 25 MPH!!!)

I've already had a governor change and it
did nothing except fix my stuck in 1st problem.
Then on top of that I don't have lockup and
To use a ghetto light switch (and ALDL )
To manually lock it up.

Could this be engine related such as ignition
control model or vacuum?

Re: no 2-1 kickdown

ECM controls lockup function - nothing else related to that except the ECM.

Have you tried adjusting the TV cable for the shifting issues?

Yeah I had it all the way at one point in and the only change
was that I didn't have 4th til 55 mph
But the shifts felt great like a shift kit.

Re: no 2-1 kickdown

There is only ONE adjustment for the TV cable - the RIGHT one. Never set it where you want it, set it where it needs to be. Otherwise, you'll burn up that tranny quick! Bad TV cable adjustments have been know to fry a 700R4 in a matter of several blocks of driving!

Yup! Adjust the TV cable the correct way and don't drive it until you do! Sounds like it's too loose right now. Do a search on here for adjusting it.

Re: no 2-1 kickdown

The 700R4 is terrible for the 2 to 1 kickdown. Mine never kicked down above 10mph. Every other gear worked fine. My solution was to install a T56.

Yes, it is the 4th gen 6 speed. The complexity of the installation depends on how much experience you have. As far as swaps go, its about as simple as it gets. Still a major project to do it right though.

Re: no 2-1 kickdown

The early 700R4's had many shift timing issues, no kick down at slow speeds, to speaced out or stacked shifts, etc. The TransGo Senior Heavy Duty Shift kit that I offer will fix this in the vast majority of cases. I modify the Shift kit to offer quicker and firmer shifts at WOT, and quicker 3-2 downshifts. What rpm does the transmission shift at, at WOT? What changes were you trying to accomplish with the governor change?

The very first problem i had with my 700r4 was the lock up not working until I it reaches speed 85MPH (which will get me a super speeder ticket here in GA)!!! Then the governor went on me in January leaving me in 1st gear...got it fix though my shift points haven't ever been that high in my oppinion even at WOT. Part throttle from 1st it shifts at 2500 @ 20mph and at WOT shifts 3500-3800rpm around 35mph. After that @ WOT from 2nd to 3rd the most i get is 2800 to 3000rpm around 55mph if i'm lucky. 3rd and 4th seem to operate correctly. As far as lock up after replacing the CTS every blue moon it locks up in 4th as it should for now i have a manual switch to control the lockup function. But the thing is once i leave 1st i cant go back unless slap stick to 1st or drop below 10mph.
