My T5 Blew Up
So my t5 transmission blew apart on I95 yesterday. What are my options for an upgrade that has the same bolt patern as the t5.
I am a little apprehensive about buying used transmissions . input would help thanks

Re: My T5 Blew Up
What blew up? Last t5 I blew up was driving on the highway. The counter shaft actually became oblong in the bearing race. I dove it from NC to long island that way. lol But long story short I was able to replace the shaft and the bearing. The rebuild kit other wise is cheap.
Other wise bite the bullet and go t56 swap, There direct bolt in, just need to change the crossmember.

Re: My T5 Blew Up
its a world class borg warner t5. stock shifter
the motor is a small block 350 with a holley 650 carb and a 480 lift cam. also had long tube headers. probably pushes 300 to 350 hp
I shifted into neutral to slow for a toll booth then i shifted into second and it kept popping out. i was unable to force it into any gear other than 1st and 5th. so i just used those two gears to try to get me home. Was going 75 down the interstate with the transmission whinning and rattling then 5th gear went out completely.
As i coasted to a stop the wheels kept locking up sporadically with the sound of metal being chopped up. it was very loud.
Now i can start the car in all gears. 1,2,3, and 5 do nothing, they act like neutral. 4th kindof workd but it sound like metal chopping and gears slipping and can only do about 2 mph and burns my clutch up.

Re: My T5 Blew Up
Hanlon Motorsports is your best place for information and parts for T-5 transmissions. They even have a video on how to disassemble and reassemble T-5 transmissions. We used the video, with their parts and the transmission is as good as new! Great people!!

Re: My T5 Blew Up
worst part on the WC T5 is the stock pos shifter.... that all... should take off from day 1
I would not recommend to buy and install a T5 but it held up to my last build putting around 480.... 2nd part to install is the 5th gear bearing billet retainer....
so 300 - 350 is NO problem

Re: My T5 Blew Up
Nope, not the shifter, or shift rod, or shift forks.
The teeth stripped off of the clutch gear and/or the countergear.
Guess how I know!!
I used to have a WHOLE PILE of those worthless weenie things that had done that to, but I finally threw them away.
Not really worth fixing, as I can personally attest to. Sounds like T-56 time.

Ive blown the input shaft gearing once. But if that was the case here he would have lost all gearing at once, the only gear he would have would be 4th, since its direct drive. But I guess I still can be wrong, Im excited to see what it is now.

Re: My T5 Blew Up
i tried to drain the oil and there was none. it must have overheated itself. it must have had a major leak because i just had the fluid changed when i had that transmission installed 2 months ago. Will this cause anymore difficulty when rebuilding it as far as parts.

Re: My T5 Blew Up
If it ran dry, it is GARBAGE.
Not only "because" it ran dry (in which case every single moving part in there is ruined, including the big ones that you ordinarily re-use in a "rebuild"), but also, because of WHY it ran dry.
Most likely, the fluid all fell out from the front countergear bearing hole in the case. The reason is, the case is destroyed. That's how these fail... the thin casting, all around all those big holes in the front of the case, stretches. When this happens, 2 results ocur: (1) the hole for the bearing becomes oval which allows it to be too far from the clutch gear bearing, which is where the leak comes from; and (2) the fact that the 2 gears are too far apart causes them to mis-align which IMMEDIATELY ruins even brand-new ones installed in brand-new bearings. Once that happens to the case, you can rebuild it every single day, and twice on Sundays, and it will STILL try to eat itself in the exact way that yours just did, and the fluid will STILL fall out.

Note in this pic how there is a stain below the bearing. That's the fluid where it came out. Note also the circular wear pattern on the face of that bearing; that's from spinning in the case and rubbing on the clutch gear bearing retainer (the big round rusty thing that partly covers it), which of course it's not supposed to do, and can only do because the case no longer fits it tightly. This transmission failed exactly the way yours just did which is why it's sitting on my shelf. Not sure why I haven't thrown it away except to take pictures of it I guess.
If your trans looks like this, DO NOT BOTHER spending money on it, you might just as well take the cash out of your pocket and light it on fire. Instead, find another transmission.
Having been there and done that, I HIGHLY recommend a T-56 swap.

Re: My T5 Blew Up
so the speedometer gear was only tightened by hand by my mechanic and came undone on the highway resulting in 135 dollars towing charge and i need a new transmission.
I called him and he says its not my fault and what really happened was someone crawled under my car and stole it (i know that is not true since i was travelling down the highway when my speedometer quit and noone can crawl under my car at 90mph, unless this is a scene from speed) He says its not his fault
