83 camaro cable clutch help

I have a 83 Camaro with a 305 in it, someone has already put a 5 speed clutch pedals in it but it's a auto car. I'm purchasing a 5spd trans and bellhousing from a guy he said it's out of a comaro now is my dilemma. Guy claims it's a cable trans but these cars are hydro? My buddy has a triple disk clutch out of his street stock cheap. Can I change the clutch fork for a hydro and run a slave cylinder on it? Or what should I do?

Re: 83 camaro cable clutch help

THere is no "cable" clutch on these cars. Only hydraulics or linkage. The linkage is bad enough; thank the good Lord it doesn't descend all the way to the 7th level of Hell with a cable.

The trans does not care what kind of actuator the clutch is equipped with. They are all the same in that regard.

The pedals, and the BH, however, are different between the 2. You need to be sure of what you've got before trying to hook it up.

The linkage system was used in 82 & 83; only year for a 5-spd with that was 83. I HATED it in mine, just like I hated it in all the 4-speed cars I had before it. I yanked that crap out of there THE INSTANT I came across one in a junkyard, must have been in around 86 or at the latest 87. The linkage stuff is EXTREMELY hard to find parts for nowadays, and most of what you find has already broken at least once. It is dung.

It's easy to put hydraulics in instead. You can buy the entire hyd assy at your local stealership, pre-assembled, pre-bled, and ready to just stick in and go. If of course whatever is in your car, is all hyd stuff.

First thing to do is figure out what you've got. The hyd BH has a big bracket looking thing hanging off the side with about a 2" hole in it.

Been a long time since I've seen the pedals for a linkage setup, I got tired of pushing that garbage around from post to pillar so I threw it in the trash I guess about 15 years ago or so, so I can't recall the difference. For sure though, if it has 2 little brackets that hang down from the pivot bolt, that's the hyd setup.

Take pics and post em here if you can, we'll probably be ablee to figure out what you've got and what else you need.

Re: 83 camaro cable clutch help

what i have right now is a 305 with a 700r4. however the prev owner already swapped in clutch and brake pedals out of a 5speed car i havent looked enough to see if its a hyd clutch pedal or not. So if its a linkage belhousing i could just buy the 5spd trans and get a hydro bellhousing, also could put hyd clutch pedal in if its not already in there? I dont want to buy the bellhousing if i cant use it

Re: 83 camaro cable clutch help

Yes you can swap the pedals. Easiest to change out the whole assy; you gotta take it completely out to take it apart anyway, doesn't make much sense to take 2 apart just to move parts from one to the other, when you can just sock the other one in unmolested.

Yes you can get a hyd BH. For my 83, I got the BH and pedals out of a 84 car, in about 86 or 87; went through no telling how many T-5s starting before then and in later years, to the point I have whole shelves stacked high with destroyed T-5s; the last one was a 91, got that in about 95 or 6; all of that stuff is TOTALLY interchangeable. The trans and BH do not care what each other is, as long as it's out of a V8 F-body.

Toughest thing you'll have to do, besides come up with the COMPLETE set of stuff, is cut the hole in the firewall. Which is to say, there's nothing very hard about it.

When I said to post pics, I mean of the parts you need to identify what system they go with. We all know what 305s and 700s look like. Not much info there.
