Ok the rear is said to be posi drum with 2.73 gears from an iroc z would it be a good idea to change the gears

For the cost to change the gears, you could just get a rear with the gears you want.
Well easier said then done I've looked everywhere been looking for a posi disc off a 90 to 92 but no luck

Perhaps because of current prices in gasoline, you might consider highway gears like the 2.73's, but personally, I wouldn't want anything less than 3.23's. As Camaronebie mentions, find a rear with the gears (and brakes) you want. Remember too that there is the fourthgen option.Originally Posted by Murraydpsr90

Yeah, I understand that. If you haven't already, you might get aggressive and post in our site's classifieds and craigslist, call/visit boneyards or swap meets. I saw an 89 IROC roller with rear discs and PBR's just yesterday at Lawrence's swap meet, so they are out there. Good luck with the hunt.Originally Posted by Murraydpsr90

I just bought a 9 bolt posi with 373 gears for my 87 IROC. I was a little weary of going with a 9 bolt considering I have a 10 bolt 273. But its the ratio I want and all I have to do is swap. So Im going for it! The question is, the new rear (9 bolt) has drum brakes. Has anyone ever seen this on a borg warner? Im not too concerned because I have drum now, but is there any things I sould look for or pay special attention to when doing the swap? Any advice would be helpful

Since 3.73 is a 10-bolt gearing, are you sure it's a 9-bolt? IIRC, some early model cars were equipped with 9-bolts and drums. Further 9-bolt info here:Originally Posted by mchooks1234

Upon further expection today I discoverd the rear I actually have bought has a 3.27 gear ratio. Im still going to install it and see how the car reacts. Im hoping for some improvement. As I understand it, this rear has a 3 series carier which means I can go lower on the ring and pinion gearing. Im happy to know some of them had drums and not a conversion I was worried about that. Is that 150 dollar ta cover worth the money? I cant seem to find a chrome one.
I just picked up a 10 bolt 3.23 posi w/ disc brakes out of a 90 IrocZ off Craigslist for $200 delivered. The car was in a front end accident and had less the 100k miles.
I plan to rebuild the brakes, replace the wheel bearings, clean it up, paint it and install it next winter when I rebuild the rear suspension.
I was hoping to find one with 3.42 gears but couldn't pass on the price.

Will a 9 bolt that had disc brakes allow drum brakes to be installed?
I am looking to get a sweet deal on a 3.27 9bolt to replace the 2.73 10bolt in my car right now. The 9bolt has had the discs removed, and i'm fine with using drum brakes.
