How can I move a '91 Firebird without key? (Automatic)

I'm restoring this car but it's at my aunt's house. I'm not moving it very far, but I don't have the money to get a tow truck or trailer. The next best thing in my situation is have my friend's pick up just pull it. I've heard of how you can sort of mess with the transmission and put it in neutral. Let me know how please and thank you!

You can get a tow bar that fits the front end, after you pull the urethane nose off.

It'll hitch up to a truck just like a trailer & tow it home like that. Actually works very good & with the front wheels locked straight, it tows VERY well. That is how I got my 91 home from 1.5 hrs away.

Re: How can I move a '91 Firebird without key? (Automatic)

How exactly is this done? (Sorry I'm such a noob) And does the car roll with automatic transmission locked? Or...?

Thank you for your help by the way

Nothing wrong with being a noob. Everyone was at one point & we all had to learn at some point! At least you asked. Only bad question is one that is not asked.

You can get under the car & unhook the tranny cable. By doing that, you can manually move the selector (from under the car) into Neutral.

I found my tow bar used and not sure how you'd get the steering wheel to move without the a key, so that you could flat-tow it with a chain & 2 people (1 pulling, 1 steering the 'bird). Well, I kinda know what needs to be done, just not how to get into the steering column to do it.

Re: How can I move a '91 Firebird without key? (Automatic)

Why don't you have the key? And more to the point if you don't have one, why not just have one made, you will need it sooner or later anyways, doubt many people here would know how to bypass it, but if you really need to, I imagine you could just disconnect the shift cable and switch the lever on the actual transmission into neutral. I'm about 95% sure its the shifter itself that locks you out of shifting, but the problem is you still need the key, because the steering column would lock up without it, and that I don't know how to get around.

Doesn't matter if you have a key or not, you have to take the driveshaft out.

Thanks for understanding haha well now I get you, so is the cable sort of hard to shift into neutral? Could this maybe hurt the car?

And the tow bar I know about that now thank you!

Well good luck I guess, best bet would be to find them if you just misplaced them somewhere in your house or what not, generally a good idea to get a set of spares made whenever you get a new car or an apt where you only have 1 set of keys, getting a spare key made is like $2, much cheaper than it costs to replace lost ones when you have no spare.

You can pull the shifter plate off the console and dissconnect the cable that runs from the shifter to the ignition switch and then you should be able to shift normally. But you still wont be able to steer it...

This.

Towing an automatic in neutral when the pump is not lubricating the parts with fluid is DEATH to the trans.

Really? Now that's a problem, even if it's for not a long distance, literally its about a block away.

Unbolt the driveshaft from the pinion yoke,
wrap the u-joint caps in electrical tape,
use wire to tie it up to the floorboards solidly.
It's not worth trans. damage to save 15min of work.

Well it seemed much harder to do, so I fix it where it is.

Re: How can I move a '91 Firebird without key? (Automatic)

fun,fun the way to do this is to remove the steering wheel then remove the locking plate that locks the wheel you might be be able to remove the ingition switch to where you can use some needle nose pliers to turn into the on postion and that would allow u to shift out of park but i can remember if the vats wire has some slack to it.and you dont have to drop the drive shaft for short distance.when towing with driveshaft in you just can go over 30 or 35 mph go with 30 to be on the safe side

Re: How can I move a '91 Firebird without key? (Automatic)

I really don't know if its a 2 way street, but if the engine turns the trans when its spinning, which then turns the tires, provided its spinning fast enough for the TC to start coupling, then wouldn't the wheels turn the DS and thus the trans if the car were in drive instead of neutral? If not and someone could explain why/how that is that would be great, I'm kind of curious about it, been thinking about it since the one person on here brought it up.

the tc turns the pump which makes the valve body functional, only the engine running can turn the pump
