5500 rpm shifting???
i got an annoying problem! my 85' iroc 700r4 is shifting crazy... when i go from park to drive i get a noticable jerk... then the car drags or should i say takes its time getting up to speed, it will rev real high to about 5500 and then another jerk then i m up spd in a seconds and the rpm drops to normal...its easy to spin the wheels when doing sometimes too..the car only has 78,000 on it when i bought it last year...
could the prev owner did something to make the car shift like this? stall converter, shift kit, etc... i need help, i cant drive arouond like this all summer.....thanks guys ( and gals....)

Re: 5500 rpm shifting???
Are you saying that when you drive normally, it will not shift till you get to 5,500rpm? If this is the case, then the governor gear is most likely broke. The 1982 - 1986 transmissions do not have a smooth park or neutral to drive engagement. The 1987 & up units have a forward accumulator which makes the park or neutral to drive engagement much smoother.

Smooth isn't in the early 700r4s vocabulary, it is downright harsh, atleast the one in my 83 was. Wish they never would have junked that case when I had a shop rebuild it. Van has never felt the way it orignally did since. The stock WOT shifts in the 83 were around 5,300 rpm and the replacement shifted around 4,200.

And if i come to a stop light.. it does it all over again... real sluggish til it reaches 5500 then i feel a shift and it gooes with tires spinning...

Have you checked your TV cable? Governor? Those are the two most obvious things to look at. If the clip for the cable breaks, the trans will go to full line pressure, and shift real harsh. If the teeth on the governor strip, it will essentially be stuck in first gear.

Heres a pic of my TBI (not carb, but its the best I have) showing the TV cable. Its the thing highlighted. Check to make sure that the plastic clip hasnt broken off. Youll be able to tell because the cable will just be dangling there.
Also, open the throttle all the way up, and check to see if the cable has slack. it should be nearly taught with no slack. If the clip is broken or breaks, most transmission shops have them in stock. I think some autoparts stores may have them as well. The one they have just slips onto the cable, and clips in the same place the old one did.
