Thinking of getting one, anybody have cons about them? If so, why? Where would be the best reasonable price be found?

Re: Aluminum driveshaft.....cons?
only possible con would be slightly less durable than a steel one, other than that, they are better. The 3rd gen aluminum shafts are smaller in diameter than the 4th gen ones, but are thicker.

ebay or classifieds or craigslist or something like that.

4th gen ones will bolt right in, but are a little shorter.

4th gen LS1 type have dampner built into the front yoke. Make sure you get a straight one without any dents or cracks if you get a used one.

Re: Aluminum driveshaft.....cons?
cons: Not as strong as a good steel shaft. Factory aluminum driveshafts are nothing like an aftermarket aluminum driveshaft. They're actually very thin and weak.

If you can find a good one for about a $100, go for it. Not a big performance upgrade, but it looks better then that rusted piece of crap.

well it takes a little less to damage an aluminum one over steel but I really dont see any cons otherwise

Yep. A friend ran a third gen alum. shaft in a 10 second car with no issues. That's more of a problem with the later cardboard damped ones.

So unless the OP is going to drive a rallye on a rocky road, alum. is a better choice.

a new one on the order of 300-400 dollars, a used one should be in the 50-150.

Re: Aluminum driveshaft.....cons?
I bought a new Inland Empire 3" aluminum driveshaft and the thing is very beefy. The thing is rated to go to very fast and take alot of HP abuse. No vibrations at high speed either.

My first choice was a 1LE used one for $100. If I had to spend that much for the above ones my old steel dr shaft would still be on the car.

Yo! haha... But I had mine for the last 12 years. Also it was in almost brand new condition at that time. My opinion was, no one should spend over $100 for a 1LE/LS1 aluminum shaft now.

Re: Aluminum driveshaft.....cons?
the aftermarket ones are stronger though.. but i guess it's overkill for me personally, but if you're not making more power than an LS1/6 then you should be fine.

Re: Aluminum driveshaft.....cons?
So the 4th gen DS are the same length, and I will not have an issue? Is the yoke the same? Plug & play.
I am keeping my eye out on ebay. Here is one...

Re: Aluminum driveshaft.....cons?
the actual 3rd gens one are stronger, but the 4th gens ones are easier to find. You'd be fine with either id say. I mean unless your making 450 RWHP then you might wanna step up to an aftermarket one.

I think I have seen this picture before. All I have to say is DAMN! How much HP were you pushing? What did it feel like when it happened?

Re: Aluminum driveshaft.....cons?
yeah I shudder to think about something failing that catastrophically on my own car, lol. That thing is twisted as hell, looks like it was nothing but a rolled up tube of cardboard to that engine.
