So both the drive and driven gears in the new trans were the same as the old?

i would think so, both same transmission, i know the gear on the shaft was identical.

Transmissions have different drive and driven gear combinations to accommodate the rear end ratio. I suggest you verify that the drive gear is the same. Perhaps the following will be helpful:

Nope.

When the speedometer, speedometer cable, driven gear housing sleeve and driven gear are all the same but the speedo now reads differently, it's impossible for the drive gear in the trans. to be the same.

It would have been easier to swap that gear before you rushed to get the new trans. in.

The Camaro one might be a 15 tooth. The Caprice one is probably 17; maybe 18 tooth.

there is nothing different inside.the two gears are the only thing that sets your speedo.the tooth count must be different, regardless of the color.

This from the link I provide above:

"Beware that both 34 tooth and 42 tooth are both green."

Jack, the rear up on stands, put the trans. in neutral, mark the gear in there w/ a sharpie and count the teeth.

You swapped the trans. so you can do the gear swap. This time, once the tq. arm & driveshaft are dropped and the trans. is off the crossmember and drooping, unbolt the tail and once that's off, work the gear past the clip. It's easy, all things considered.
