Transmission or Converter?

Hey guys. I have a question. I replaced my top end on my engine. Some TFS 195's, cam, HSR, but I left everything else the way it was, you know lack of funds!

Now, when I take off from a dead stop and hammer it down to WOT, it seems like the trans slips unless I take my foot off the gas. If I put the shifter selector in D1 and take off, it doesn't do it.

So, I was wondering if maybe it could be that I need to get a better converter or does it sound like this could be the trans? I would just hate to buy a high dollar converter and install it, just to have a bad transmission ruin it. Any help you guys can give would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not 100% positive, but honestly it does sound like the converter, but like i said im not 100% positive, just from what u said. Its kinda hard to determine with out experienceing it in person or being there, i mean it could be a number of things.

Re: Transmission or Converter?

"slipping" (as I have experienced it) occurs usually between shifts (like from the 1-2 shift it will slip). Until such time as it just stops grabbing at all. Thus, in D1, you are not changing gears (never leaves 1st), and thus no slipping (yet).

rebuilding top end, and thus increasing power, can easily start a tranny slipping. It's not that the tranny starts to slip really, it's just that before you didn't have the power to make it slip, and now the increased power makes the slipping noticeable. It was probably on it's last leg anyway, buit you just couldn't feel it yet. Happened to me - 305 TBI ran great - swapped to a carbed 350 with exhaust, cam, headers, etc. and instantly tranny slipped - the "new" power was more than the old tranny could take.

Re: Transmission or Converter?

Thanks guys! OK, let me ask you this. Do you think that a good way to check to see if the trans is bad would be to take the pan off and change fluid to see if there are any metal flakes in the pan? And if there aren't any, do you think it would hurt to put the new converter on?

Re: Transmission or Converter?

Well i wanna say you should change the fluid every 30k miles so if its been awhile you should go ahead and change the fluid and filter which isnt hard to do at all if u need any help on the filter just ask if it hasnt been changed theres a plastic peice that will have held on the orignal one u want to take and disguard, and to make sure u get out the old seal before u put the new filter in, or else you'll have doubled up seals and wont get a proper seal, and there will be a magnet at the bottem of the pan check that for metal, if theres ALOT of metal its prolly the trans, also if the fluid smells really burnt or is really black that can be a way to tell uve been burnin the trans. but over time it gets like that if it hasnt been changed, the viscosity changes in the fluid and doesnt do its job like it should if not properly changed. so that might be a good idea to do like i said if it hasnt been done in awhile cant hurt. Its only like 20 at most for the filter and like 30-40 for the fluid, you need about 5-6 quarts

Re: Transmission or Converter?

If anything, changing the fluid would make it worse.

When tranny fluid is not changed at recommended intervals, it's betterf to leave it alone. Clutches over time loose fine particulates that are in the fluid - these act as a friction modifier - these particules will help the clutches "grab". If long term unchanged fluid is removed, the particulates are removed as well, and thus the friction kodifying properties are lost - and the end result is that the fluid change actually makes the tranny slip worse.

So - if old fluid is changed, it will not help any slipping that might be occuring.
