I have a 86 trans am. When you go from park to reverse or drive it kicks forward or reserve pretty hard. Also going into drive the rear tires decide to squeal once in awhile when the car is at idle speed. But lately ive been having a problem when trying to accelate it starts making a clunking/metal on metal almost, does this most when you hit 2000+ rpms. I noticed it was doing it also when ever it was going at a inclin. But now i also have it were if your in park or netural it will not rev past 3000 rpm. when it does it seems like it has a govern on it, which it doesnt. It was able to rev to 5000+ and now it will not. It looks like the fluid is burnt, its like a little bit darker color then it should be. Not sure if i should swap out transmission or is it a torque convert prob? Any advice is most needed and apprecatied.

In my experience, a jump like that is idle speed set too high- mine would chirp the tires going from P to D and R. Turned down the idle speed 100 rpm, problem solved.
Burned fluid= not good. Grinding = rebuild. You could replace the fluid (run some Seafoam trans cleaner through with the old fluid prior to adding fresh), but you're probably looking at a rebuild. Even if it was just the converter, you'll have damage elsewhere due to the fluid causing issues.

Here ya go. Brand new level 1 700R4 from Bowtie Overdrives. It'll handle over 300 HP, only $1,095.

Or, for about a fifth of that, you can take my 700R4. I'm selling my 700R4 with the torque converter for $200. Stock 700R4, (1986 IROC, originally a 305 car) has a rebuild tag on it from GM, so somewhere in the 99K miles it was rebuilt. Shifted perfectly when last ran, which was real late in 2009. Car is currently torn down for my planned 383/Manual 700R4 build.
