Help Straightening Out Shifter
Hi All,
I'm new to this forum, sorry if this is posted in the wrong section but I wasn't sure where else to put it.
I just purchased a project car, a '85 IROC Z28. It has the 305 TPI motor in it (for now), along with a 4L60 rebuilt transmission (was installed around April of 2000). It also has a B & M Slap Shifter that I hate.
I started out by ripping out all of the interior, while I'm down to it I'd like to replace the shifter. Ideally, I'd like to go back to stock - I have the original shifter cable, but it looks like they bypassed the safety switch or somehow cut the wires out all together (not sure if this is standard for aftermarket shifters or not). I verified that the car will shift into and out of any gear without pressing on the brake.
So...not sure what to do now. I can find a stock shifter for pretty cheap and most have the switch on them, but I have no idea how to rewire it, where to get the plug, etc.
I'm not 100% opposed to doing some kind of aftermarket shifter if it's easier, but I want it to look good and professional (the B & M in it doesn't fit, they cut part of the console to get to it, etc.).
I posted some pictures if it'll help, looking for some ideas of where to begin - wiring diagram, what shifter to get, how to re-hook up the switch, etc. Thanks.

Re: Help Straightening Out Shifter
The neutral start switch is supposed to be the large purple and large yellow wires, IIRC. The idea is so the engine can only start when the shifter is in neutral or park.
The ignition shift interlock was a second cable. But unlike the shifter cable, it doesn't leave the cabin.
B&M still offers their console MegaShifter for our cars, if you want to try that.

In the picture I posted above, there is a large purple and yellow wire that are wire-nutted together. I assume that is the way they bypassed the switch?
As for the cable...yep, pretty sure THAT is the cable I found tucked behind the carpet. Makes more sense than the shifter cable.
I assume it's a good idea to hook up both of safety devices, right?
