Need some advice on a 4L60E

hey guys im looking to find out if there is way to see if a 4L60e out of a 95 camaro is worth getting, I know a guy parting out a 95 camaro and he is selling everything dirt cheap, he is only askin 100 for the tranny and im in the middle of doing a Lt1 swap into my 91.
So is there any way to tell before I buy and install?

Thanks in advance
Ken

Re: Need some advice on a 4L60E

Sometime during the '95 production run, the PWM lockup was introduced. Something to be aware of. I'm not in favor of it myself. I want the converter either 100% locked, or 0% unlocked, nothing in between, wearing it out. I want to feel it engage without having to watch my tach. Same goes for hearing is dis-engage. But there are kits to fix it if you get a PWM. With the kit or non-PWM, you can use any 700R-4 converter you like.

700-R4 will work fine. If you wanted the 4L60E because it's a cheap replacement people have done the swaps here before. I believe that year uses the same crossmember as the 700-R4. You'll find plenty of info using search.

yea i have searched, but I was tring to see if the 4l60e from this 95 z28 would work , cause the tranny is only 100 bucks, nad if i keep the 700r4 ill probley be spending a little more then 100 on getting the 700r4 towork.

Yes it should work with some extra parts. That being said I imagine you would need the computer and wiring for it depending on your lt1 ecm you are using. I believe they are computer controlled.

I believe after '95 they used different bolt pattern and it would need a custom crossmember.

Re: Need some advice on a 4L60E

Excluding the versions for the 3.4L / 3.8L:
The '95.5-'97 4L60Es were all the same, and bolt in the exact same as any 700R-4. The '95-'95.5 4L60E's are the exact same as all the '94s.
PWM versions have an extra wire in the harness, and if you remove the torque converter, you can see PWM cast onto the pump housing.
The only possible reason to avoid the PWM versions is having to buy the lockup-fix kit. It's about $30, IIRC.

There were some changes for '98. The tailhousing went from 4 bolt to 6 bolt, and the bellhousing became bolt-on rather than integrally cast as before. One bolt got deleted from the upper right rear of the LSx blocks, but all the other holes stayed the same. And because that 1 hole got deleted, they began using the top center, which many of the old 350 blocks had drilled and tapped, but which 700R-4s didn't use.

Just make sure that it is/was behind a V8, as the V6 trans won't bolt up to the V8 block.

RBob.
