rear end help

my 89 has an unknown rear in it and the only break pads i can use are the front ones after i wear them down half way,i can switch them to the back and they work, besides that no break pads will work, also when i do switch front to back the pads still drag a little on the rotor

Only two types of braking systems: iron Delco-Moraine calipers with 10.5" rotors (82-88) and alum PBR calipers with 11.7" rotors (89-92). Purchase the appropriate pads. There'll always be a bit of a drag.

You can see what PBR's look like in my vbGarage (icon next to my online status).

Did the disc brake 10-bolts have the same brake calipers on them?

Though the backing plates are different, the brake systems themselves are the same, 9- or 10-bolt.

Re: rear end help

Someone may have swapped an older axle into that car. My '84 rear pads aren't so different from my fronts.
And when I recently replaced the right rear rotor, I had to use channel lock pliers to twist the caliper in.

Re: rear end help

my rear breaks are the same as the front, just seems like either the rotor is to wide or caliper pistons dont open far enough

If you have the Delco-Moraines, note that the pistons screw back in as ronnjonn mentions (they don't press in with a C-clamp like they would in PBR's), so your issue may lie there. Autozone should have the tool--or you can use a set of needle nose pliers.

Re: rear end help

The moraine calipers require regular use of the hand-brake to keep them from seizing up.

And even the above may not be sufficient. For those who haven't seen it, here's the recall:

I have Moraines & an Automatic so I don't use my e-brake regularly like the T5 guys do. I can't remember the last time I pulled my e-brake, yet my brakes work. I can put it on jackstands & the brakes easily stop the rear tires. I've locked up all 4 breaks at 65mph. Maybe I have the ONLY Moraines in existence that actually work?

I had a rear bleeder leak all the rear fluid out of the master & that was 1 scary ride going to get a new bleeder & to where I could get a 2nd person to help bleed the brakes. Yeah, I shoulda just bought Speed Bleeders but didn't.

Re: rear end help

You twist the piston itself.
