T56 vibrations...need assistance

Hey everyone. i did a T56 swap on my Z. used the LT1 T56 purchased from a member on this board. he sold me the complete swap. i was having clutch disengagement problems and a tough time getting into reverse and first, so i pulled the tranny again and i just reinstalled a fresh timkin pilot bearing, a new timkin throwout bearing, new clutch pivot ball, and bled the brand new hydraulics. so the only things that havnt been touched are the trans itself (60K miles) and the spec clutch and pp that came with the swap. thy PP and FW have a few spots of discoloration, but there is no clutch chatter.

so here's the issue, the car still moves with the clutch fully disengaged and in gear. also, there is a very large vibration in the car as the rpm's increase, while not even moving. in neutral and clutch out, the car shakes a bit with more rpm. the shaking gets worse through every gear with the clutch in. i didnt notice the vibration when i drove the car. i only took it out once since the trans was reinstalled yesterday.

i had to pop the tailshaft off and reseal it when i had it out due to a leak, i cleaned the magnets when i was there. i had the trans standing upright and i noticed a metal bearing/bushing that was slipping out of a retaining clip in the tail shaft. i lined it up and thought i got everything back in place perfectly.

the pilot bearing is installed in the crank so that the image on the left in the pic is facing out towards the FW and the image on the right is towards the engine.

i installed the trans myself with fluid in it and the driveshaft still installed. i really cant believe that i bent the input shaft.

i appologize for the thoroughness of the post. but i have to instill that 90% of my drivetrain is newer, this includes the motor. there are no metal shavings on the engine oil dipstick, and its got less than 10k on the engine rebuild.

any suggestions as to what the problem is? i know the headers are rubbing on the control arm mounts but theyve never been a problem before. all mounts are new, u joints new too. hood open with rpm's increasing, nothing visibly moves.

help??

Thanks!

A mechanic's stethoscope would probably help make this a quick diagnosis.

More like bent the clutch disc if the trans. was splined into it and allowed to hang excessively.

spec clutches come with a 1/16" spacer that goes behind the hydrlics on the imput shaft.
Do yo have that in place??

It's not a concentric slave cylinder trans. like the LS_, Viper and late Fords. If it were, lack of that shim wouldn't cause vibration.

but there isnt any clutch chatter, and i dont feel the vib too bad when driving.

no spacer came with the trans, so i didnt install one...

im praying it isnt the clutch disk or the pp, but im assuming thats the only possible thing. its just an expensive piece and i dont want to replace it unless i have to.

has anyone here taken the tail housing off a t56? its hard to explain... there's a thrust washer in the tail housing that goes between the case and the end of one of the gear assemblies. is it a possibility that if the thrust washer is out of place that it would cause this vibration?

did i install my pilot bearing correctly?

The way you describe it in your first post makes it sound like the final non-tapered roller bearing on the output shaft which is held with an inner snap-ring. But you might be talking about the race/shim for the final tapered bearing on the rear of the countershaft extension? The race shouldn't **** in the bore of the tailhousing due to tolerance of it's o.d. relative to the tailhousing, even if that shim is offset a bit.

The pilot bearing can go either way. It would just keep the bearing cleaner and retain rollers when it self-destroys to have the tapered edge facing the trans.

yes, it would be the race i'm referring to. so nothing to worry about there. so i should be looking at more of a clutch disk problem? i can replace that, but i think i'll be going with another brand of clutch. is it possible to have a pressure plate resurfaced? this car is more of a toy/project for me (i'm 19) and i have alot more important things to spend money on at this point in my life...

i should also mention that there is a pulsation in my clutch pedal so i know this should be obvious now that it is a clutch/pressure plate problem due to having replaced most everything else. this would also solve the disengagement problem. also very hard/impossible to get into reverse. im just worried that it may be trans related-input shaft... can anyone recommend a reputible transmission shop in CT that knows the t56?

Ah yes, I soo missed that. Way to tired sometimes.
I'm wondering if the clutch finger height is wrong?

clutch finger height? what do you mean by clutch finger? do you think if i shortened the T stud on the clutch fork i could get more engagement out of it? either way i will be pulling the trans again i think. just need more motivation... haha

Re: T56 vibrations...need assistance

could it be a bent Flywheel or maybe some random peice of something got stuck behind it when mounting it and its slighty cocked to one side enough to matter but not enough to notice

i didnt pull the flywheel this second time i had the trans out. it's been installed in the car since i initially did the swap. the trans has been out twice since then, the most recent time due to disengagement issues and hard shifting into 1st and reverse.

i will have to pull it all out again and i will get everything checked out. have to find a reputible transmission shop close to northeast CT, and will need about 2k saved for a clutch and worst case rebuild. we shall see. i'm in no rush at this point. cant register it here legally until next year anyways.

i will post up as i find things out. thank you to everyone for the ideas, and if anybody can think of anything, please post up or PM me.
