Spohn crossmember issues...Pics??
I have a 82 TA I am installing a T56 so I ordered the adjustable torque arm and trans mount from Spohn. I ordered them to be powder coated red when I received the the torque arm was red but the mount was black. So I said no big deal I can live with a black mount. But when I went to install the mount it didn't look right to me. The bolt holes do line up but there is a large part of the mount that hangs out passed the frame. It just doesn't look right to me. Now I am wondering if I have the wrong mount. Here are the pics of it hanging over. I am sure someone on here has installed this part on a T56 swap.
Please let me know what you guys think.

thats normal, the T56 mount is further back so the mount hangs off the frame. Not a great design IMO, since it cantilevers on the thin sheetmetal frame, but there is little you can do about it.

Re: Spohn crossmember issues...Pics??
Wow, I am really disappointed in this fit. I know the T56 is set back more so the mounting bolt are farther to the front....but as you can see from these pics I can get my hole finger between the frame and the bracket. If they would have made the bracket wider at least it would have laid on the frame flat. My motor is 500 hp and I have spent a ton of money on this build so far but this worries me.
Like you said //<86TA>\\ it cantilevers on the bolts. I am worried them breaking or pulling out.
The other thing as you can see from the level in the pic its off by at least 1/4 inch. How will this effect the load of the transmission?
Anyone else use this set up from Spohn, and how did you make out with it.

Man, I have the same part and it doesn't fit that poorly. Also, you should tap the third hole on each side for extra support.

Hey, I just noticed, the third hole on each side that I tapped was the very front hole. Are you sure you have the crossmember installed correctly? Are you sure the crossmember shouldn't be mounted one hole forward.
Kinda hard to say from the pics, but its worth a look.

The peice is slotted. Any positioning to be done that would improve matters?

OP, defiantly tap the extra 2 holes and use 6 bolts total. That may actually help your issue since you will not have more support a couple inches further back
might i add, thats one clean looking undercarriage! i might eat off of that.
If you dont mind repainting the glorious floor pans, you could fabricate another mount toward the back of the subframes to support the rear of the trans crossmember a little better. But FWIW, many people here use that setup and honestly, i have never seen a subframe failure that wasnt because of severe body rot.

Hey guys,
ok the slots don't really help much for adjustment. I moved the mount ahead and used the back 2 holes. As you can see from the new pics the passenger side is much better but the drivers side is not even close. In fact the whole left side doesn't even set on the frame. I did some measuring and its like the mount needs to be an inch and a half wider. I have never had an issue with any of the parts I got from Spohn, Maybe I just got a bad one.
Like you said //<86TA>\\ maybe I can make another cross mount to support the over hang. Or maybe I can just get this one modified. Either way it sucks because with the shipping and duty where I live it cost me $695.00 for these parts.

thats because he has a 82, it used the front most 2 holes since they had the 200r4 and the t10 transmissions. he would have to tap the rear hole in his application.

Sutton, on my '87 and every other thirdgen I am aware of, there is a third hole that is untapped from the factory on each side. This hole can be easily tapped and used for additional support for the crossmember. Do you have this hole on your car? I don't see it in the pictures.

Re: Spohn crossmember issues...Pics??
No I do not have a third hole. There are only 2 holes on both sides, the only other hole is the one is the one you see there way up further and thats one is no good to me. If I drill a hole through my frame where the third hole is for the mount it really won't do anything because it is hollow up there. There is nothing for the bolt to grab......I dodn't know what to do....

Re: Spohn crossmember issues...Pics??
Like was said before, 82s only had the front 2 holes unlike all 83s up that had 3 per side. You The best way to go at this is to weld a nut to a large washer, then holesaw a hole in the bottom for the nut head to fall through and then weld the washer to the frame. You can also do it from inside the frame but then you have to cut an access hole on the side or in the floor. Another option is using a large nutsert. That's a nut insert that works like a rivet, dril a hole, insert and tighten so it expands and locks in place. Your cal, but def. do the other 2 bolts. Still, I hate how all those X members look, cheaply fabbed junk fmade from angle iron. No one even offers a clean contoured one that actually fits the contours of the subframe and nearly tucks up. Any backyard bubba w/ scrap iron and a welder can fab that.
