Summit 3.42 Gears - Good Choice?
Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with 3.42 summit racing gears. I want to order some for my RS since it has 2.73 and open diff. Plz help me out or point me in the right direction, Ive tried searching summit gears but I can find the answer Im looking for.

First what rear do you have? A 10 bolt or a 9 bolt. I'm thinking the RS had a 10 bolt. Then you will need to get a 3 series carrier for a 3.42. If your not sure about all this you can do some searching on this forum for a lot of info.

I pulled the cover off and i have 2.73 gears and 28 spline axles (7.625). I plan on getting a trac-lock diff from summit as well.

I just plan on doing some hard driving with it and I havent heard anything about the summit racing gears. Im sure they should be good for regular driving, but what about hard launches?

Thanks for the advice. The question still is if the summit gears are any good because I cant find the answer on this forum and Im gonna be going to the track a couple times a month. They are at a good price but it would be useless to spend $170 on gears plus $250 on installation only to have the gears break and having to spend on new parts again.

I've never bought something as intricate as gears as far as stuff they make, but generally summit makes pretty good parts for the money, they should be good.

Re: Summit 3.42 Gears - Good Choice?
Summit doesn't "make" those gears; they just buy em from somebody and have em boxed. Same as all the other "Summit" parts.
The question then would be, who ACTUALLY made them. Is it someone dependable and trustworthy, AA&M or Superior for example; or is it some offshore foundry in the Far East?
Most of the stuff Summit private-labels is not "junk", they have too much at stake in their reputation, to throw it away like that. So more than likely, they're OK.
However, $170 isn't a good enough price to be worth taking the risk IMO, since you can get about any brand you want from any number of places, including Summit and lots of others, for right around $200. For example http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com...5/randp-1.html If you buy a 3 series differential you won't need the "special" thick gears that cost more.

Re: Summit 3.42 Gears - Good Choice?
I just got a rearend from a fourth gen yesterday at a junkyard with those same gears. I was looking for a couple things for my car and i came across a v6 with disc brakes and i was instantly sold. I would have taken them off ur hands if u would have told me yesterday before leaving, lol. Thanks anyways.
