Dang front transmission seal!

Was driving from VA down to NC yesterday. I was just outside of Elkin when the transmission started acting weird. It was going in and out of OD. I knew right then that it was low on fluid. Advance was about 2 miles up the road. I drifted as much as I could and actually made it to their parking lot.

I pulled up and seen just a hint of smoke, then I looked underneath and there was trans fluid all over it. Even the rear bumper cover was soaked. I was hoping it was a cooler line, but nope. Front seal.

Really aggrevating. Only about 3k miles on this transmission. It really sucks to have to pull a transmission for a $5 part. It also sucks when you are going back up the road and for miles you can see $9 a quart amsoil trans fluid in the middle of the road!

I was lucky enough to not have my wife and 2 month old with us. Also my father-in-law works for a guy with a wrecker, so 4 hours later and fuel costs I had the car back at my parents' house in VA.

I just really hope that I can get it back together and that the clutches/bands are still okay. Like I said, this 700r4 was rebuilt just over 3k miles ago with a kit from Dana at Pro Built. If the trans is toast then I will probably go T56.

So anybody else ever had a front seal go out? I wonder what causes it. There was no warning signs. I never even knew there was a problem until it stopped shifting right. My dad had one blow on the interstate in a blazer, but the fluid soaked the exhaust in it and smoke was pouring out from behind it.

If it failed with that low of mileage then either the rebuilder didnt do as much as he said he did or you damaged the seal installing the converter. Seals last a very long time

Re: Dang front transmission seal!

Oh I know.

The worst thing is that Im pretty sure it is all my fault. For one of two reasons.

Frist, when I had converter issues I either didnt replace the seal knowing that I should have, or I did replace it and didnt get it in good. I dont remember at this point.

Just venting out aggrevation. All the blame is entirely on me.
