removing TCC lock-up valve

I'm installing a 3000 stall non-lockup converter in a friends f-body. read the posts about removing the seal and check ball and installing a non-lockup valve in the pump. My question is does the pump have to come out of the trans or can it be done just by dropping the pan?

Re: removing TCC lock-up valve

you can drop the pan. If I remember correctly the valve is right above (vertical standing) the tcc solenoid. Solenoid comes out with 2 bolts and the valve is in with a clip. Again that is if I remember right.

I just figured you could unhook the wiring and everything would be fine. I didnt know you had to replace the valve.

Re: removing TCC lock-up valve

thanks for the info. I was just going off info I found on this forum when I searched for "non-lockup converter in a lockup trans". There is a kit from Trans-Go to replace the tcc lockup valve in the pump. I bought a converter from a member on here and it came with the kit. I read about it here: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...-question.html

Re: removing TCC lock-up valve

Non lockup converter will also generate more heat. It will feel a little mushy too during normal driving.

Make sure properly seat the converter and have atf in it.

Normally for street driving lockup is perferred.

Re: removing TCC lock-up valve

What diameter is the torque converter? What brand? What rear end gear ratio? Do you have an external cooler here?

Without knowing the stall, you will have to try it and see how it acts.

Re: removing TCC lock-up valve

dropped the pan, removed the filter, removed the tcc solenoid, removed the internal snap ring and the valve, washer, and springs came out. I asked this question because it has been a long time since I did any trans work. pretty straight forward. got the non-lockup valve and spacer in. removed the check ball capsule if the end of the input shaft and the o-ring. slid the converter in. had to use 1/2" spacers between the flywheel and torque converter bolt pads. filled up with atf and pulled a few hole shots. seems to work good.
