hope this isnt a stupid question but are there options for making the stock rear strong enough to hold higher hp/tq levels? i was told anything over 400hp and those things come apart. I'm shooting nitrous through my motor and its pretty built and I'm sure I'm well over 400hp and mine still runs fine but I'm wondering if I'm going to hear a bang soon. and just wondering if i can strengthen it up.

I've had great luck with my 10 bolts from the 4th gens.... zexel torsen diffs in them. 99-02 years.

My first one handled countless 11 second passes and street abuse in the automatic/3600 stall, and then a few nitrous 150 shots. 400whp + 150 shot = 1.41-1.45 60 foots at 3450lbs. It held that just fine.

Then it handled my twin turbo for alittle while. low 10 second passes, close to 550-600whp then. Moved onto another 10 bolt with 2.73 gears. its held 9.73 at 142 mph pass, 1.49 60 foot. Many other bottom 10 second passes all over 137-140mph. 650-690whp on mustang dyno.

 

pshh then those 10 bolt nay sayers and eat stale corn flakes ... I'll keep my rear the way it is and enjoy it with nitrous I'm maybe around 550hp and i will probably never put slicks on it so i should be fine. thanks orr

 

I pushed a beefed up 10 bolt into the 11's but they've also been broken on the street.

Abuse it until it breaks then decide if it's worth rebuilding or replacing with an aftermarket diff.

 

well i'm a little past my rag on it years but those rears are pretty cheap in the junk yards. i just wasnt sure if it was something that would snap on the 1st good hook up kinda thing.... granted i cant hook up with my cheap tires but i might be able to afford some better ones some day lol

 

Thats what I'm doing, pushing it til it breaks and then thinkin of a rear end. So far I've been lucky with mine but I known a few others who have pushed them very fast and havent broke them. BUT some of the stock LS1 guys have broken them just slicks on. Mostly T56 guys..manual trans hurts them quickly but autos generally work out well. (no transbrakes)

I never used a transbrake with my 10 bolt. When I installed a transmission with a brake, I upgraded to a 9" at the same time because I knew the 10 bolt wouldn't survive transbrake launches.

 

ya i dont think i'll ever be getting a trans brake... street drivings enough for me.

 

I don't know what your driving but if its 89 or older there's a good chance it has 26 spline axles and if it has a gear ratio of 3.08 or lower its a 2 series carrier. That means that if you want to run lets say 3.42 or a 3.73 you will need a three series carrier.I have a 89 and it did have the 26 spline axles and 2.73 two series carrier. So I did a complete rebuild with the strongest components I could find. I used new 28 spline axles and a gear ratio of 3.42 installed on a Eaton posi. three series carrier than caped it of with the L.P.W support cover. I put it all on my DD and was assured buy the "Rear End" Shop that did the install that if I could break it with the set up I have "now" he would fix it for free. I went that wrought instead of the 12 bolt or 9" in because Ill never need it. At times I push my car as hard as I can from a dead stop/launch with my automatic and it barks than hooks,then barks again going into second,and that's exactly the way I like it.

 

you can run 3.73s on a 2 series carrier. they make a thicker ring gear version just for this.

 

This is true but how dose that make it any stronger ?
I guess one of the questions to ask is does he have a posi. and if not dose he want one. At that point its time to upgrade to a 3 series 28 spline carrier(IMO a Eaton Posi. is extremely strong and perfect for either a daily driver or a 400hp 1/4 mile car.) with 28 spline axles and the support cover. Thats how you make a 10 bolt stronger. In the end only so much can be done and the 10 bolt is a week link when it comes to pushing allot of power with sticky tires.
