I have a lot of play (1/8") in my 9" pinion even after removing/adding all shims and torquing to spec. Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything! What could be causing this?

Im not seeing a crush sleeve or washer 4 your pinion nut
Quote:
It's a preload washer with shims. It's all the way on the left, and the shims are on top of the red matco torque wrench. It's .510" tall exactly the same as the crush sleeve.Originally Posted by TTOP350

I wondered what that was. Thought it may be a solid spacer. does the bearing you have (thats not pressed on) slide down past the splines on the pinion??

I bought it directly from Strange because I live right down the street from them.Originally Posted by TTOP350

The pinion slides up in the yoke waaaay easy. make sure you put some teflon paste on the splines to keep it from leaking oil.
Do you have a thick washer under your pinion nut? Im not seeing it?
since you have used the pinion nut make sure the last time you put it on that you use some locktite on it.

PROBLEM SOLVED. Here's what it was: Apparently you need an addition spacer if you use a chromoly yoke with an OEM style (same size front and rear bearings) pinion support. Strange offers these spacers (you get 2 of different thicknesses) in their install kits, but does not list them individually in their catalog.
Basically the yoke is too short, so you add this spacer to make up the space. After that everything's fine.
Thanks to TTOP350 for the help.
