Truck 700r4 for my 88 Camaro

Ive searched the site and know you can put a truck 700r4 into a 3rd gen. You just have to swap the tailshaft housing that specific for a Camaro. Adding a shift kit will help get a better performing shift as well.
In one of those posts about the topic a member stated that in order to take the tailshaft off yould need to disassemble the whole transmission. Is this true? I can install a shift kit but if i have to disassemble the trans to put a camaro tailshaft on it, it wouldnt be worth the hassle.
I ask because I can get a truck 700r for about 150 bucks, where at a local salvage yard a good used one specificly out of a Camaro will cost about 250 +core.

Thanks for the input.

If it's a 2wheel drive truck trans, your good to go. A trans from a 4 wheel drive has a shorter output shaft and won't work. Just remove the 4 bolts holding the tailhousing and it will come right off. Later model trucks have a metal reluctor wheel where your camaro trans has a plastic speedo gear. Remove the metal wheel and replace it with your plastic gear.

Thanks! And yes it is a 2wd trans. I failed to mention that part in the op. Im trying to find out the year of the trans as well if its older than a 1988 trans im going to pass on it and get one from the yard.
