TRANSMISSION WOT.

1987 Trans am 305 TPI 700r4 or 460le transmission.

I bought the car with this particular problem. The guy said it was a rebuild and it would need some tuning, whatever that means. I think that was bull because i had to change the VSS in The Tranny From a cable to a two prong electronic sensor. This would suggest he got it from a yard.

Here go's.

Ok if I am at a dead stop and i go WOT the car goes like hell till it needs to shift into second gear. The car will not shift into second unless i let off the gas an immediately WOT again. I goes through 3rd and 4th fine. (of course i believe it will only go into 4th when not in WOT for it only does when i let off). Also on the shifter i can put it in OD,3,and 2. it will not shift down to 1 at all while drivin or other wise. Their is no play either, suggesting it will go into 1. By 1 i mean first gear. ALSO... When im driving the car and i shift down to 2 i get no resistances from the tranny (No downshift).

what could be wrong? do i need a new tranny or part?
I saved this car from hell. And if it was not for Third Gen It would be sitting in my back yard. Of course with a tarp and and a car cover combo. So i know the help is here. Ive searched around but found no similar problem. PLEASE HELP. Tyvm

Re: TRANSMISSION WOT.

I would talk to Dana at Probuilt. I had a trans that did some of these things and ended up buying some up graded parts to make things happen the way they should..

Unless you have a computer to control a 4l60e in your car, it's a 700r4.

Re: TRANSMISSION WOT.

Ok so it must be a 700r4. Unless the main comp runs the trans. Iknow it does have a vss.

Re: TRANSMISSION WOT.

Make a phone call to the trans experts instead of getting info from us guessers! They can help ya waaaay more than we can!
I just try to blow them up! I buy parts and my trans guy fixes em.

That's because it's slipping, creating heat from friction. The heat boiled the fluid and now you probably just need to rebuild the transmission. Chances are if you drop the pan, you'll have 1/2" of grit laying in the bottom.

Mine was slipping into second also until I adjusted the TV Cable. When it was slipping I never went for WOT on a slipping tranni, It would of shifted into 2nd if you had the patience to let off the gas and feather it into second. You cooked it and now have to pay the price......
