Transmission HELP!!
Hi everyone, I recently purchased my first Camaro and all I need is the transmission to get it running. Which tranny do I need? I have heard two different things: a 700R4 or a 4L60E. I am very confused. Can someone please help? The car is a 1992 RS with a 350 instead of the 305. Thanks!

Car: 1992 Camaro RS
Engine: 5.0 TBI L03 V8
Transmission: Rebuilt 700R4 W/ Corvette shift kit

Re: Transmission HELP!!
Yup. 700R4. While your at it get a shift kit for it. Often times these transmissions need a shift kit just to shift into OD. It's a great bang for your buck. One of the best mods you can do on these cars.

Re: Transmission HELP!!
Well the 700R4 is already a really good transmission. My transmission guy said that mine STOCK could handle 350hp. With a little tweaking these transmissions can take a beating from some MASSIVE torque. I've seen 800hp 572cid BBC Nomads with a modded 700R4 before, and other monster street/strip cars. Good luck mate!

Re: Transmission HELP!!
Thanks again. I'll definitely go with the 700R4. Here is my car so far. Let me know what you think.

Re: Transmission HELP!!
Well you need an air cleaner. And that front left tire is looking pretty sad. But looks like a great car to start off with.

To be honest with you, this is my first restoration so I do not know much. I'm learning as I go along. The guy I got it from said it was a 350. It has some serial #'s stamped on the engine. I was told that was a sure sign. Also, to me ( the untrained eye) it looks like one compared to the pictures I've seen.

Re: Transmission HELP!!
have you looked up the serial #? From visual inspection it's hard to tell. This apears to be an LO3 Throttle Body Injection 305cid V8. But it could be a TBI 350.

Re: Transmission HELP!!
It's still hard to tell from the outside. Here is your engine and my 305. And just for your information 350s were not available in the RS unless it was the B4C police package, and even then I believe those were Tuned Port Injection L98s, I don't believe they had the 2 barrel Throttle Body. Did he say it was all stock or that he swapped the engine out himself?

Hmm. I wonder if thats what the RPO decoder is for when you go to the HOME menu. I can't say I know these number by heart.

Re: Transmission HELP!!
What is the 8th digit of the VIN? If it is a F it's a 305, 8 it's a 350. Or at least thats the way it works in the T/A.

Re: Transmission HELP!!
I just installed the transmission and started the car up for the first time. It sounded amazing! I have'nt been able to drive it yet because I have to install a new hose for the tran, but it feels like it as a lot of power. Thanks Skelitor for letting me know which transmission to use. Now all I need to do is put in some new door hinges, shocks for the trunk and hood, put in air cleaner, and give it new tires. I might as well do the brakes while I'm at it. I can't wait to burn rubber in my first Camaro!

Re: Transmission HELP!!
You need the casting number on the block. It's located at the rear behind the head, on top, on the drivers side. Find the number and google it, or check here:

Hard to see if things are messy or dirty. Search the forums if you need a pic to locate it.
Vin's and RPO's will tell you nothing useful if the engine has been swapped.
