Per James' comment, GM waffled back and forth between ATF and gear lube, with no changes whatsoever to the parts themselves, almost as if from year to year either the warranty dept or the gas mileage dept won control of that spec in a given year.
Other mfrs who used the same transmission with no changes whatsoever to the parts themselves may have spec'ed either of those fluids, or in some cases, motor oil.
Seems like basically any petrochemical you put in there with a viscosity between about 5 and about 90 is probably OK. I wouldn't put in anything thinner than ATF or thicker than 85W-90.
I ran half & half gear lube & ATF alot in my dozens of those. Didn't seem to matter what I put in em though, they all tore up in about as few miles.

"Power" has nothing whatsoever to do with grinding.
Crashing 3rd and/or 4th is usually a sign that it needs a pilot bearing. Most often it's caused by the clutch gear ("input shaft") being out of line with the mainshaft ("output shaft"). The pilot is what holds the clutch gear in the correct alignment, so when it wears out, it allows the tip of the clutch gear to wobble around, making it impossible for the 3/4 synchro assy, which "bridges the gap" between the 2 shafts so to speak, to work right.
Here's what it looks like and where it is.

A dead one of those will also make it make more noise than it should, and will create the problem where it will have a strange vibe some of the time at engine speed, especially in 4th gear.
Consider changing the clutch out, just because it's probably time anyway, as you replace the pilot.

Re: Non-WC T5 Transmission fluid?
sofakingdom: My engine vibrates when it gets up between2 and 3 grand it does it in or out of gear with the clutch in or out. Do you think that could seriously be where the problem is ?
