T5 trans questions - having trouble identifying something
Hey guys,
I just bought an 84 T/A 15yr anniversary edition. It was originally the L69/700R4 combo, but has been swapped over to a 350 goodwrench and what appears to be a T-5 Transmission. I took it by my work and got under it, it's all been painted blue and says Borg Warner on the side of it, as well as the number 13-52-066-923. I'm not sure if there's any way to identify what type of transmission this is, as I'm not sure if Borg Warner made any other transmissions other than the T5 Non-WC and WC. Is there any way to tell just by looking at it and not having to take it apart?
Also, what fluid would be used in a T5 exactly, and is there a difference in WC/NWC when it comes to fluid? If so, I want to find a fluid that will prolong the life of this transmission, as it's attached to that 350 Goodwrench.
Thanks guys.
EDIT: I read the sticky for the T5 info about the gear fluid, but it doesn't specify a weight, also since I don't know which T5 I have I don't know which fluid it would be anyhow. >< Such a pain dealing with an aftermarket conversion. lol

If its a NWC, 80 weight gear lube should be fine IIRC. If its a WC then you need ATF. Dexron II or better equivalent. There are 2 ways to check if its NWC or WC without taking it apart. The first is to check the tag number, it will be stamped on a metal tag attached to one of the bolts that holds the tailshaft housing to the main body. The other way is to look at the bearing retainer cup on the front of the main case. Its on the lower passenger side of the front of the T5 and if its installed in the car you will only be able to see the lower portion of it. If its a NWC it will be completely flat across the face of the bearing retainer. If its a WC the outer 1/4" of the face of it will be flush with the rest of the main case and from there the center of it will have a slight dish. Its not real deep(less than 1/16") but is easy to see.

By all means check the number off the tag. Just be aware that a tag can be changed pretty easily. Look on the drivers side of the case near the top. You'll either see a large hex head bolt or a button head Torx. The Torx is normal for a WC, Hex is normal for a NWC. To see the bearing race you'd have to remove the transmission.

Thanks guys, I'll be sure to check that tomorrow after/during work. So it would be on a tag somewhere on the driverside of the transmission assembly? I don't know transmission parts quite as well as engines, so forgive some of my incompetence. >< lol
Is there anywhere in particular I can look up this number that will tell me which T5 it is or? I'm going to try running this number I found through some sites to see if I can find out myself, but I'm not sure yet.

As for the tag, its on the second bolt from the top on the driver's side of the tailshaft housing on mine.

I've never heard of a Torx head bolt on the tailshaft mounting. The trans-to-bellhousing bolts have a hex head with the Torx head in them. Mine is a WC and has only hex bolts holding the tailshaft on. I could swear I can see the bottom 1/4 or so of the bearing race with my trans installed in the car.

I never said anything about the tailshaft. The reverse lever pivot bolt screws in from outside the main case. It's visible at the top middle of the main case on the drivers side. On WC T5's it's a Torx head bolt, on NWC it's a normal hex head. If you remove the bolt, the transmission has to come out and apart to put it back together. Borg Warner changed it to a Torx to keep people from messing with it, about the same time that they revised the internals to the World Class spec.
The bearing cup is visible with the transmission out of the car, without the bellhousing, but once the bellhousing is bolted to the transmission and the assembly is in the car it'd be really hard to visually distinguish between them. It's a lot easier to spot a 3/4" or so Hex bolt from a button head Torx. The tag number is important, but if you've got a NWC T5 and you want to get rid of it, it'd be really easy to remove one bolt and change the tag.
If a person just wants a basic idea, and the car runs and drives, there's probably no way to really be sure without pulling the transmission, but you can get a pretty good idea from the reverse lever pivot bolt.
