cant figure it out need help
So I need help. First off I have an 85 but the motor is out of a 87 but idk if they swap the trans to. But here is my problem the other day I had to get on my car to keep from getting hit well when I did it it felt like the trans slipt and the car wouldnt come out of first.now when the car is cold it wont shift but once it warms up it shifts but only if I barely push the gas. If I push the gas to much the trans slips and falls back into first. And if I get it to shift and let off the gas and hit it again it acts like when u ride a bike down a hill and then try to peddle again well the motor revs till u get the motor at the same speed as the trans. So any clue please help. I need to know if its an easy fix or am I looking at a rebuild?

Try adjusting the kickdown cable and see if that does anything. Also I'd go ahead and change the fluid and put in a filter kit to try some process of elimination. If neither do anything it could be the converter. I'm just guessing on these, maybe someone else will come along and know more about it.

Yes, adjust that tv cable so its really tight. If that works what will happen is it will shift a little later in each gear during normal driving but it shouldnt slip at WOT. You may have to let of the gas a little to make it shift tho.

press in the black button on the adjuster and at the same time push the cable forward toward the driver's compartment. Then open the throttle all the way and you should hear about 3 clicks. That is the proper adj. of the tv cable.

I can almost gaurantee you have a tv/kickdown cable(unless it has been removed or you are using a electric controlled trans). This is the only way that the trans knows how much load is on the motor and how it increases line pressure. Is your setup carb, tpi or tbi? Do you know what trans you have? Is it a 4 speed or 3 speed?
Re: cant figure it out need help
Its a tpi and no I dont know like I said in the first post the motor is from a 87 and I dont know if they swap the trans to or not. But I know there is no tv cable and the trans looks like a 700r4

Without the TV cable the line pressure will always be low.
An '85 700R4 will bolt up to an '87 engine without issues. But get a TV cable in there or the new one will be getting replaced shortly after the first drive.

Re: cant figure it out need help
If it is indeed a 700r4 then there should be a tv cable regardless of motor swap. If you are able to, get under the car and see if the tv cable is in the trans. It might be possible that they did not connect it when they did the swap. On the passanger side near the dip stick tube there will be a cable that comes out of the trans. I believe it is right infront of the dipstick tube. If it is there, see where it is or where it goes too. It is possible(unlikely and very stupid) that they didnt put the cable on and pulled/extended it outwards to have full line pressure all the time. This would explain the slight tip in on throttle would kick it down to first and keep it there.
Another question, is the trans fluid at the correct level?
