Filled differential through vent hole?

So my filler hole was rusted to hell and I ended up putting 2quarts of gear oil through the top vent hole.

The seal that meets the driveshaft is leaking so I figured the car was due for some fluid.

I removed this and added fluid through it

Re: Filled differential through vent hole?

Im guessing you drained the old fluid 1st ?? How about limited slip additive ? do you need it?

Re: Filled differential through vent hole?

Don't have a posi so i didn't use any additive. Nope didn't drain it but I know the leak has been around for about 6 months now, so it def needed it.

With nearly two quarts added to what might have been in there, he's probably overfilled.

Yeah. Unless it was a real bad leak & puddling the fluid or to the point of getting gear whine? It is likely overfilled now.

Re: Filled differential through vent hole?

Thanks for the reply guys. Yeah I wouldn't doubt it's overfilled.

Should I go ahead and drain some of it or leave it and let it leak out?

I'm assuming ovefilling would add pressure to the seals, but since I already have a seal that's leaking would that still apply?

Re: Filled differential through vent hole?

I'd make an effort to remove the fill plug (which you need to do anyway). If overfilling has occurred, fluid will dribble out to the proper level.
