Re: What posi carrier?

Ok after checking around I'm guessing Auburn now? What gear lube should I use and do I need any friction additive crap?

Re: What posi carrier?

Yeah I've seen the pics myself, thats an Auburn. I have the same one in my 84. Though my ratio is 3.73. Anyway, 80-90 gear oil, and yes add GM posi additive. That is what I've been told and seen done.

Re: What posi carrier?

Its been a long time since my car's gear oil has been changed. Truth be told. But I'm told theres no substitute for the stuff GM sells. People use the run of the mill parts store stuff, then change to the GM stuff and they say its a big difference. You do want some kind of posi additive to preserve the clutches that are used in Posi rears though.

Re: What posi carrier?

That's an Auburn.

Note also, that is a "special" "thick" 3 series gear for a 2 series carrier, so that's a 2 series carrier. Be careful of that if ever buying gears.

Either 1 bottle of the GM additive, or 2 tubes of the parts store stuff, I've used both with equally satisfactory results; 75W-90 gear oil ONLY (synth such as Mobil 1 is fine) but NOT the the super thick stuff, 85W-140 or whatever. Put the additive in first, then the gear lube. One of those covers that holds more fluid such as these http://www.taperformance.com/products.asp?cat=48 is a good idea. Be aware that if you use one of those, DO NOT fill it up to the level of the fill plug in the cover; fill it through that hole if you want, but only up to the level of the OEM plug in the side of the pumpkin.

The additive doesn't so much "preserve" the clutches, as allow them to slip smoothly when required. Without it, the action is real jerky and noisy; it'll feel like it's "catching" going around corners, and make all kinds of groaning and other funky noises.

Re: What posi carrier?

Even more good info especially on the carrier series...thank you. The reason I have the cover removed is to install one of those aluminium covers. Good to know about the fill plug variations. Those are Richmond 4.10 gears installed by the PO.

Re: What posi carrier?

OK, sofakingdom, I read what you said about the fill hole and using the stock one when changing the fluid and I consider any thing you say in this forum to be taken into deep consideration concerning your expertise in subjects like this but have to ask, what is the fill hole on the L.P.W. cover for ?I thought the cover was supposed to allow for more fluid/cooling.Is it because that the cover is deeper that there is more fluid even while using the stock fill hole ? May be you use the cover fill hole because its easier than the stock hole and just use the stock hole to measure when its full ?

Re: What posi carrier?

Right: the cover is "deeper" front-to-rear, which allows for more fluid.

The fill hole is for .... {drum roll please} .... filling. {cymbal crash} It's fine for that.

Only thing is, if you fill it up to that level, you'll have fluid up above the level of the axles, in fact about a gallon extra and mostly filling the tubes, which will about guarantee severe axle seal leaks. So yeah, it's like you said about fill and measure: use the hole in the cover to fill it, but take the OEM plug out, and fill through the cover (which is ALOT easier to put the fluid into than the other) until it runs out the OEM one. Maybe add a tweeeeeeek more, but not more than a few ounces past that level, to avoid other issues.

Thanks for correcting some of my errors, as well as wording. I was reaching when I wrote preserve. So its 75-90, now that I think about it I think you're right. For gods sake I have 75 90 in my garage sitting there waiting to go in.... Sorry if I caused any confusion Danzigs.
