700r4 Question
Hey guys you've all been so helpful to me in the past so I figured why not and ask another question that has arisen.
So I've had this freshly re-built 700r4 in my car for about a year or so now, and I drive pretty much normal..I leave it in D up until about 55mph or so then I push it up into OD for highway cruising. Anyways, that isn't my question..my question is I do sometimes downshift to 2nd (blipping the throttle to match the revs so the car doesn't jerk, I guess kind of like heel toeing a manual trans car) to engine brake to help conserve my brakes that will need servicing soon. So I was driving home tonight and I downshifted to 2nd to slow down for a stop light that goes into my neighborhood and the rpms just dropped to idle almost as if I pushed it up into N.
The car had been driving fine, goes through the gears real smooth, doesn't make any odd noises, and still pulls just as hard as it did before this happened. So pretty much, what is causing it to do that? I appreciate any help guys!
Thanks!

Re: 700r4 Question
So google ended up being my friend on this one, overrun assembly issues = lack of engine braking..
So im left with my question being, how long can I safely drive on this? I've read of some peoples cases of them going another 100k on their trannys with a few track days in between. If that's the case i'll live for now..but I just wanted further opinion.

Re: 700r4 Question
Maybe see about getting the TV cable adjusted by an expert. Also you add a torque converter from either a 93 or 94 (not sure which year) to add some cheap stall. If you like shifting, add a vette servo too.

Re: 700r4 Question
That's all fine with me, but having the tv cable adjusted will help my lack of engine braking? Or you're just telling me that as something to try out and see if anything changes?

Re: 700r4 Question
Only way to fix the engine braking is to go inside the unit. I would take it back to the tranny shop that rebuilt it and see if they will stand behind their work or try to stick it to you.

Re: 700r4 Question
if i were you, i would stop shifting it like a 5spd until u get a manual vlve body put on. automatics are not spose to b shifted like a stick. i have a 700r4TCI Streetfighter with manual vlave body and i can shift it. before i had that i had a regula stock 700r4 and i tried that....BAD IDEA.
if you want to shift....do not downshift to 1st going faster than 10 or 12 mph or your rear end will lock up and you will be freaked out.

Re: 700r4 Question
Looks like it's about that time to start saving up for a t-56..it was going to get done sooner or later anyways I guess soon would be a good time. I'll just baby the car around in OD and hope nothing else fails me in the mean time.
Anybody else have experience with this? Is driving around on it the way it is going to do a bunch more damage to my slushbox? This car is my DD so I really hope not..

Re: 700r4 Question
You probably blew out an oring. I would talk to the shop that rebuilt it if possible. You probably arent helping it because if you blew an oring you are just bleeding off pressure from all your other clutch packs. I would take it easy on her.

Re: 700r4 Question
I can do that, I don't drive it like I stole it all the time anyways its my DD lol. The labor cost of pulling the damn tranny is just outrageous though. But like you said, maybe I'll get lucky and they'll stand behind their work. At the same time, I don't expect much in this economy.

Re: 700r4 Question
If it is a good shop they will stand behind it because it will make them money in the long run.

Re: 700r4 Question
So the shop didn't want to help me out unless I paid them a ton of money (shocker). But the strangest thing happened yesterday..was driving down the road and came to a stop, while stopped I moved the gear changer down to D out of OD. Got the car up to about 55-60ish mph, let off and low and behold..engine braking! LOL.
So idk what that's all about but now the tranny is doing what it's supposed to. I guess I'll just drive on it like this since everything is working completely fine now, but I have changed my driving style..no more downshifting to slow down for lights/signs..just 100% brakes. Maybe my car was pms-ing for a couple of days idk hahaha..

Re: 700r4 Question
Thats good to hear. Hopefully it was just some trash blocking a port or holding up a checkball. You might think about doing a fluid change on it. I usually like to do one early on a rebuild to flush any trash out of it from the rebuild. I would also tell everyone and post on every review site I could get on about that tranny shop but, then again I am vendictive that way.
