Rear Wheel Bearings

Hi,

Was going to replace the rear wheel bearing on an 82 Firebird I am restoring. It has no Engine or Transmission at the moment. It is a standard axle and had a 3 speed automatic transmission. I called up to order some rear bearings and was asked did I just want the bearings or the repair bearings. How am I supposed to know that. I am confussed now as to what I need.

What goes wrong with the back axle that repair bearings are needed. Is it on the wheel side that things go wrong or further up. I jacked up the car and twisted the wheels and there is a noise, sounds like the shaft moving on the bearings but should I hear that noise. Don't hear a whine. The car has been stood for a good few years so maybe there isn't enough grease on the bearings.

Would appreicate if someone could explain.

Thanks.

The axle rides on the bearings, so the axle may become worn (normally allowing the seal to leak). To move the bearing to an unmarred portion of the axle, a repair bearing is used. I've never had good luck with them, as you can see in the link below.

For me, new axles, bearings, and seals.

BTW, differential fluid lubes the bearings.
