hey, im thinking about buying a 1984 trans am, and the seller says there is nothing wrong with the tranny, but the clutch is broken. is there a way for me to tell if the tranny is still good before i buy the car and replace the clutch ?

There is really no way you can tell without pulling it, you could pull the pan and see how much metal has collected to the magnet.
If the price is right, replacing the transmission is not that hard or to terribly expensive.
Then you will know what the transmission has been through!
