Re: 3.73/Disc brakes

L69 cars. 5-speed for sure, but only some of the auto ones.

Problem is, those will all be the crappy Saginaw (cast-iron) brakes.

Yes, some were originally equipped with posi. Not many, but some. Whether you could still tell that by their behavior is anybody's guess.

If the rear hasn't been messed with, the posi diffs have a metal tag under one of the housing bolts.

Hrm, you can tell what rear end is in a car (assuming it hasn't been changed) by the vin? What would an 86 with a 8th digit of H have in it? I've been meaning to try and figure out what rear I have in mine, and I'm pretty sure it's original stock.

You can look under tech data on the main site for your year and model and it will tell you what gear ratio they came with.

Re: 3.73/Disc brakes

8th digit H = the base-model V8, LG4

Most likely would have come with 2.73 if auto, 3.08 or 3.23 if stick

Changed the fluid lately? I thougt not. While you're catching up on the past-due maintenance, make a point of looking.

Cool thanks, according to that I'm pretty sure it's 3.23, so a lot bigger than I thought they were. Again assuming they haven't modified which I doubt they have. Unless mine has the g92 option then they would be 3.73 but I really doubt it has that option, if it does then it's worn completely out

Guess I'll still do the wheel rotation trick to find out for sure at some point.

Lol sofa, you are really on a fluid change to find out the gears kick aren't you? Saw your ranting about that in another post haha. There is no point in me doing a fluid change in my rear end right now. I'm going to be putting a new posi and gears in it at some point in the next couple of months, it'll get new fluid then and a few hundred miles after as well.
