700R4 not moving at all after rebuild (reverse works)
700R4 not moving at all after rebuild (reverse works)
So i had my friend help me drop my 700R4 tranny out of my 1990 pontiac firebird V6 3.1, and he started rebuilding it. However we ran into a problem where we couldnt get a meddle ring placed correctly inside a groove cause it just wouldnt fit.
I ended up taking it all to a mechanic's shop who said he would do the job for 500 bucks, so i did. I told him the only thing my friend already did was the pan job but he probly didnt do it right (when i say pan job i mean all the stuff inside there as well, seals, ect.). So dude says ok he will get it done.
He got it done in about a week and i went down, paid, and took it back to my friends house where my car was and we put it all together. Car didnt move at all (only reverse worked). Also it wont shift manualy down to 1st gear, its like jammed, it just wont go even if i force it. So i pull it all out, pissed off, and take it back to the mechanic who has now had the car for over 1 month because he's a lazy *** who drinks all day. Luckily my brother started working there and got him to start working on it. So over this course of the month we find out that the dude NEVER did anything related inside the pan. So we ended up rebuilding it once because he thought the ball bearings were in the wrong spot, so we got those situated, all put back together (by this time the car was towed to his shop for convienence) and car still does exactly as it did before, nothing but reverse and still jammed in 1st (i can shift thru all gears fine except down to 1st).
Then we rebuild it a second time because he was gonna take a look at it, and the filter just plops right out, not even fully connected cause the seal on it was no good. We replace it, put it back together and try again, still the same, nothing. Then we try a 3rd time cause he mentions there may be a part missing that he thought he saw missing. We get it all torn apart again and put the missing little meddle rod where a spring is and put it all back together, still NOTHING.
So today he tears it all apart back into the gears area and my bro called me and said he did a pressure test on it and says its all fine, but then why the hell is 1st gear like jammed? Could it be related to why the car isnt moving?? I just dont understand what the hell to do.

Re: 700R4 not moving at all after rebuild (reverse works)
The main problem the car was having before it was ever taken apart was it always shifted late RPM and sometimes on longer drives it would start switching too soon and just bog down on gas when hitting the throttle and wouldnt move unless manualy down. Also on longer drives it would slip out of overdrive into drive so it was eating up gas. All gears worked perfectly fine when manualy switching to them (1st gear was never jammed).
The mechanic was telling me its just the linkage cable thats like 150 bucks needs to be replaced, BUT why the hell would it just start up as soon as he rebuilds it?? and theres no way the linkage cable will jam 1st gear into not manualy engageing right??
