performance clutches

this is my first experience buying an aftermarket clutch kit and flywheel. im putting about 350 ft-lb torque to the wheels and would like something that holds about 400. i dont drag the car on tracks, just some street racing and a bit of autocross. im hard on the car but want something thats not too stiff. also i want a lightweight flywheel. it seems like aluminum and forged steel are the lightest so what would be better

Re: performance clutches

a super light flywheel may not be the best idea if you plan to drive the car on the street, you will loose a lot of your off the line torque and it will make driving in traffic a bitch.

Centerforce dual friction clutches get good reviews and i have a Zoom kevlar "race" clutch in my 86 and love it to death.

Dont go too aggressive either, too much grip and your already weak t5 may blow

Re: performance clutches

shattering the tranny is a major concern of mine. i dont need it to hold much power but i want it to be able to take a beating. i also am not sure i want to spend the extra money on the lightweight flywheel unless its not going to compromise the streetability and will make a huge difference

Re: performance clutches

a lightweight flywheel will take away from your torque.

Re: performance clutches

im looking at ram clutch kits/ flywheels now. anyone have experience with this brand? it seems to pe a popular choice. also im trying to decide between 2 different steel flywheels, one is 17 pounds, one is 26. ive got 3.73s in the car and pretty low transmission ratios too.

IIRC, higher performance cars, such as the L69, were equipped with lightweight flywheels.

17lbs sounds like an aluminum flywheel to me.

Maybe I am confused by the LT1 sized flywheel. I guess I have actually never touched a T5 flywheel. My billet steel LT1 flywheel is about 28lbs.

Re: performance clutches

i used a centerforce dual friction till I blew it up at the reack had it abused for years on the street that's a good choice and use a steel flywheel on the street you would really have to rev it up to keep it from stalling all the time

Re: performance clutches

the 17 lb is a billet steel from RAM. ive just been getting mixed reviews on whether lightwight is the way to go on our cars or not. also, im mostly concerned with the quality of RAM components. many people say go centerforce but i just cant afford their flywheels seeing as they cost as much as the ram clutch kit AND flywheel would shipped.
