I'm putting my car back together, and I topped off the trans fluid and figured I'd check the rear end oil level while I was under the thing. The pinion seal seemed to weep oil ever since I installed the rear, so I wanted to be sure the oil level was OK.

Boy was I suprised when I unscrewed the plug from the side of the housing! About 1/2 a quart of oil come flying out! These are filled to the bottom of the fill plug correct? - I mean, I normally fill it till oil starts to pour out of the hole, then I stick the plug in - correct?

Of course, I ended up not putting in a drop of oil after that much drained out...I'm wondering if that's been the issue with the pinion seal weeping oil since I've had the rear...will overfilling cause that?

 

yes. fill just so it's at the fill plug. on the case housing. a bit more is ok, it works its way down the axl tubes anyway. (a bit more will be like a cup)

most of the time they ship them dry.
did they ship it filled?

some times fast lube Kids, over fill them by just pumping them. and yammering on to a buddy about there 5.0 rustang.

 

No, it was shipped dry...I have no idea how i could have put that much in...one of those mysteries I guess..lol

Maybe my pinion seal will quit weeping now. thx.
