Rear End Whistle
Is it normal to have a fairly recent rebuilt 3.42 10 bolt posi to have a whistle/turbo sound upon accelerating, more noticably if accelerating hard at 20-40mph ish.? I bought it used the gears look good, and dont have excessive slack. there is no banging or clunking going on like my old one. I swaped to synthetic gear oil to see if would make a differance and it dosent. Not really a big deal just curious as to if its normal.

Re: Rear End Whistle
If it's not a problem with too much bearing preload, either pinion or carrier, then it isn't even a rear axle problem. The commonly listed preload torque spec for the pinion, using new bearings, is far higher than what the pros actually use. If it was set above 20 inch-pounds, then you'll have problems.

Are you talking about whine? I don't think it's possible for Rear ends to 'whistle'...

I am very confused, and completely uneducated on an anything besides looking inside a rear end for broken and worn parts and removing and installing the entire rear as a whole. I just hate how annoying the sound is. is there any thing I can do to quiet the noise?

Re: Rear End Whistle
Now you have contradicted yourself. First you say everything is correct, now you say you don't know. Gear whine is either the wrong contact, or a bearings problem. If the whine is getting progressively worse the more miles you drive, then the gears are gonna need replaced, even if you fix a bearing problem. Since you don't understand the deal in there, it's time to seek professional help, or swap the entire rear axle assembly.
