Should I rebuild my T5.....myself???
Should I rebuild my T5.....myself???
Hey fellas I need your advice yet again. The 383 in my 89 Iroc killed my T5. I want a T56 but that is a year away in terms of $$$. My plan is to rebuild my T5 and baby it so that it will last until I have big $$$.
How hard is it to rebuild a V8 5-speed World Class T5?
Any recommended rebuild guides/DVDs?
Purchase the actual kit from?
And what tools will I need?
I really appreciate your time and help

Every penny you waste on that T-5, moves you a penny FARTHER AWAY FROM what you REALLY want.
Don't make that mistake. Throw it in the trash and do THE RIGHT thing instead.

Not too sure. Shifting gradually become more and more difficult. It took about two months from when I first noticed trouble to when it actually went bang. Car starts right up, but if I try to get into ANY gear, I get nasty grind.

On level ground, car off, put it in 1st.
Start it up.
If it moves with the pedal down, fix that. The trans. will work a lot better.
The hydraulics may have a leak. Bellhousing bolts could have loosened. Could be time for a clutch. Pilot bearing could be junk. These are all guesses, but when all gears get worse at the same time, it's a good idea to check some external stuff.

What you're describing is NOT a transmission problem; it's a clutch problem.
But since the T-56 clutch is different from the T-5 one, same advice applies. If money is an issue, DON'T use what you have of it, on the T-5; that only moves your long-term goal farther out of your grasp.
