spohn vs inland empire driveshafts.....

Well I had to pull my trans out for the flexplate that was bent out of the box. Since I have everything out I had contemplated just swapping driveshaft. I have a stock steel unit with solid u joints now. Now Im looking at the inland empire aluminum unit and spohns lower enddiveshaft and his is steel. Benifits? One to the other. I have a 2800 stall, fully built trans and 3.70 gears. Prob about 425 at the crank with my combo, think the car weighs right around 3600 or less, no ac, alum heads, billet wheels etc. Street strip so I was reliability. Only questions and concerns I have for the aluminum unit is duability. To me aluminum is delicate, prob can be dented easily if something get kicked up under the car, rock stones, stuff like that. Whats the concensus here? Did searches and didnt really find much, only guys leaning towards aluminum, and the known track cars recommending steel. Would like opinions as they are right around the same price. Thanks

aluminum will be fine at your level. Aftermarket aluminum shaftes are usually a .120 or better wall thickness. The stock ls1 shafts are paper thin and those ones break a lot. These are both lighter, and the reduction in rotating mass with technically help the car, but not by a noticeable amount

The steel will be much stronger, but at your power level will not be needed.

go with pst driveshafts if you are getting an aluminum. there aluminum one is 399 and supports 1000hp. they offer a good warranty as well.

Re: spohn vs inland empire driveshafts.....

I looked at pst but they dont list one. Plus I think the one you are refering to is 3.5 inch, dont know if I will have fitment issues. Im only running a 9 bolt, so Im sure the rear will go before the driveshaft. Ive been low 12 and 1.7 short times on this rear a ton of times with no ill affects. Didnt want to put a aluminun 4th gen one in after seeing pics of one twisted with the cardboard inside. On another note pst makes one in carbon fiber for 499, but its 2 1/4 inch and is for road racing . Keep the comments comming. Users of inland or spohns. Thanks

I think your right pst got back to me with that price but didnt quote hp level. Midwest driveshaft told me with 1310 u joints they can only gaurentee 300hp with aluminum. Seems kinda low to me?? Inland says 500hp, pst the same Im sure , and this one 300hp. I might be going with pst....

Ok talked to pst today, they recommend their 3.5 alum unit . 399 with the 3r u joint in the rear. Anyone rin this driveshaft size and have any fitment issue? I have stock torque arm and hawk off road pipe. They said its good for my power level. Thanks

Re: spohn vs inland empire driveshafts.....

I had a 383 sbc in my 91 z approximately 600 hp leaving the line at 5600 off a break. My spohn driveshaft never gave me a problem. All of their stuff is top notch.

Re: spohn vs inland empire driveshafts.....

I am actually waiting to buy before the end of the week from pst, forgot since i have a 1350 u joint mine might handle a bit more power. i know the 3.5 does fit, only issue with a 3.5 is if you have 4" exhaust and bmr extreme torque arm and thats what i have but still have clearance.
