700r4 problem

Hey guys, I'm new here and love this site.
I have a 1984 z28 I have been bringing back to life. It has just under 25K original miles on it. It had been sitting for a few years and after changing the fluid in the transmission it shifted hard and was very delayed.

Let me run you through what has happened. From 2nd to third it is a very hard shift and very delayed like it wants to shift but it won't until it is around 4500 rpm. Then in third to fourth it seems to shift fine but is delayed. The weirdest part is that when you really get on it, it shifts perfect. Now when we changed the fluid the old stuff was fine. We also put some cleaner in it that seemed to make it a little better but not much.

From what I have read on here it might be the T.V cable? but I'm not sure. I would like any help or suggestions I love this car and plan to put in a 350 or 355 in it soon. So my question is should I replace the whole transmission or rebuild it? or could I simply drop a th350 in it? Or is it just a simple fix that would save a ton of money?

Thanks,
Riley

Re: 700r4 problem

I'd try adjusting the TV cable before pulling the trans.

Re: 700r4 problem

........... Check the governor ... its easy enough to get at without pulling the trans ............. make sure its not sticking in addition to checking the drive gear ....................

Re: 700r4 problem

Both of these are good suggestions. Try them. Try the cable first.
