Trailer hitch in road + Trans Pan = Not Fun Times
Fun times this weekend. Just left the house sat. Got 2 miles down the road, came over a hill and somebody had lost a trailer hitch. I found it for them.
No time to stop, couldn’t swerve. As soon as we hit I knew it busted something. Was lucky it didn’t get the oil pan. Also very thankful we weren’t in the Grand Am (Wife's daily). It would have busted its oil pan for sure.
Free roadside is good to have. $28 trans pan + $50 fluid and about 1hr work and she should be ready to roll.
The worst part was second guessing myself and watching quarts of Amsoil pouring out on the ground.

Thank goodness for an external, steel, bolt-on, no tear-down, affordable fix.

New pan came in today. Pulled the old pan and found that the filter had been broken off. Valve body had a small chip out of it. Trans crossmember got tweaked just a bit. Subframe right past the crossmember on the driver's side has a large gash in it. Luckily it missed the fuel lines by about 1/2". Dimpled the driver's side exhaust. Broke the air dam.
Got the new pan on and fluid back in. Set the car down and drove it down the road. Everything seems fine. But then I noticed that my Megashifter wont ratchet into 3,2, or 1. P, R, D are fine. I reckon I will jack it up one evening, unhook the shifter, and see if the problem is in the shifter or the linkage.
Oh well, could have been a lot worse. So far $28 pan, $49 trans fluid, $10 filter.
